Electronic Ignition - Here it is

The new housing is ready. I am open for business.

It does not use points, but magnets and a hall sensor.
The dynamic advance is done by a built in microprocessor. All the curves for Fulvia and Flavia are programmed into the unit. The desired curve can be selected by a rotary switch at the bottom.
The spark timing is electronically balanced to 90 degree's to minimize vibration.
The unit can drive coils with a resistance of 0.6 Ohm or higher.
The distributor cap is a standard low cost one made by several manufacturers. We use Beru.
The red wire is connected to the + terminal of the coil. The black wire is connected to the - terminal of the coil.

Note that the gear wheel at the bottom is not included!!!! You have to transfer that from the old one (Fulvia or Flavia).

The unit will work with the standard 3.5 Ohm coils as used for contact breakers. The original coils are 3.5 Ohm and the blue Bosch one as well.

The red Bosch has 1.5 Ohm. It will give a better spark.

The optional black coil I am offering is a flame throwing 0,65 Ohm coil. Very high sprak energy! Never use it with points!!!!

Price:
320 euro for the ignition (without the gearwheel)
70 euro for the coil.
15 euro postage for ignition inside europe
25 euro postage for ignition outside europe
25 euro postage for ignition plus coil inside europe
40 euro postage for ignition plus coil outside europe

Till middle of may 2008 production is limited. First come first served.

Note that 1600 Fulvia engines need a larger diameter of the shaft. I plan to offer bushes to increase the diameter later. If you are in a hurry you have to turn one yourself. The dynamic advance curve for the 1600's is already programmed into the electronics and selectable through the rotary switch.

Hi Huib,

Not in a big hurry, so when will you offer the bushes for the 1600 (I don't have facilities to make the bushes you mention)? I assume that from what you say, that from May 2008 there will be more on offer?

Hi Chris

The CNC machine making the housings broke down after number 13. I need about 3 myself, so I have 10 to sell.

End of this month I am off to Italy and France for about 10 days. I still have to finish the work on some Fulvia's which are also going there. Therefore I doubt I will have time to do the bushes and get more units made than the original 13 ignitions before let's say middel of May.

Can you please confirm that the unit will also fit S2/3 1.3 engines? Ciao. Andrea

Below some pics of the unit on an S2/3 engine. Fits very well. Also the black coil was mounted. Runs very well. Pulls very quickly to 6000 rpm. I did not want to go any further.

A minor issue to be sorted is the ocassionally erratic behavior of the rev counter at idle. As soon as it is off idle it behaves normally. At idle the needle occasionally jumps up to 3000 rpm and then drops again to the correct value. I mounted the unit on the S2/3 Fulvia which happened to be closest to the coffee pot and I am not even sure the rev counter was working properly before.

Yesterday I installed on of the few available units on my series 1. I drive over 40 000 km a year with the Fulvia and ignition has always been the biggest pain in the ass. Like all other Marelli distributors mine was at least 35 years old. Adjustment with the correct advance curve was not possible anymore and especially in humid condition I suffered a lot of hiccups of the engine.

This morning that was gone! A much quicker start and especially in the low revs a much smoother engine with more torque. It did not give more power, but I did not expect that. In daily traffic it gives just the extra comfort and let the Fulvia perform as Fessia designed it.
