Can anyone help please with how to adjust the column gearchange on series 1 GT Berlina for a friend in Australia, he can't get first and second gear, and working out how it all works is a bit difficult.
The workshop manual isn't much help I'm afraid

It's probably due to worn plastic caps. Check the rods and you will see there are plastic "cups" you can tighten to take out the play.
If there's play, it will not work properly.

Jean is right. There are some plastic parts (cups, washers) in the system. The plastic from the 60's is much less stable than todays plastics. The parts will crumble or already have. Replace all the plastic parts and you have a different gear change
