I'm looking at a 1991/92 Thema 2.0 ie 16v automatic. bodywork is clean - no visible rust (not sure about engine or suspension mounts). clean inside, 126,000 miles.
There engine block is a little moist in parts, but I read somewhere that this engine has a tendency to "sweat" a little.
I've never owned a Lancia and I've heard contradictory stories about it. I will be doing a reasonable amount of 'A' road, urban driving.
The dealer is willing to put a 12 month MOT on the vehicle.
The front fogs are broken.
Questions -
Is this model fairly economical? - the specs. I found on the 'web say about 30 around town.
Is the engine/transmission dependable?
What about repairs - breaks, tyres, exhaust?
Will the MOT provide some sort of guarantee against serious rust damage?
Are there any serious caveats I should be aware of??
Price £499!!
Any replies greatfully received.

Re: '91/92 Thema Question.
Dear David,
I have a 92 Thema 16v turbo/75000 miles owned past three years.
It is not an automatic.
1 You need not worry about rust unless its been in seawater ? very well galvanised
2 The mileage is v high so do not expect miracles
3 Cam belts, balancer belts and all associated tension bearings / I advise replace / mine went at 1600 miles after I bought the car, and cost me 16 new valves.
4 Electrics can be a nuisance, go over all connectors with switch cleaner. I think the zinc galvanising makes for difficult earthing so I have found it necessary to clean off corrosion on all small connections.
5 Brakes etc pose no special problems
Driven gently 28-30 mpg should be possible / auto ?

Re: '91/92 Thema Question.
I spend four months looking for a good car and you find a 16v for less than £500!!! With a 12 months MOT. If you don't want it tell me where it is and I'll have it. At that price, even if it only lasta a year it will be good value.

Re: '91/92 Thema Question.
Dear Mr. Edwards,
I own a 1991 Thema 2l 16v ie equiped with the ZF 4 speed automatic gearbox.
It now has done nearly 45000 miles and is still faultless. It is serviced once a year and is always garaged. There must be still some very good Themas in the UK for you.
But probably not at £500.
Good luck.
