Flavia Gearbox bearings

Unread post by Michael Findlay »

The Flavia 1800 Coupe's gearbox has become progressively noisier over the past couple of weeks and I am thinking about some work. I note synchro rings and a couple of special bearings for sale in various dealer's listings but does anyone know about the availability of gearbox bearings generally? Does anyone have the numbers so I can enquire locally?

All best for the season,

Michael

Hallo Michael,

On Flavia CD1 there is an excel sheet with various bearing references. If you do not have the cd, I can mail you the sheet if I have your email address.

Hi Lucas

I do not have the CD so the bearings page would be very welcome. My address is michael@design.otago.ac.nz.

Many thanks,

Michael

I am using a series 1 Flavia 1500 saloon gearbox for donor parts for my 1800 Coupe gearbox build and have stripped it down to extract the bearings. I am assuming the 1800 Coupe gearbox is close in design to the earlier unit but I only have parts books for the 815 saloon and the 819 series saloon and coupe. I note that the spreadsheet file Lucas kindly sent me lists the 819 bearing exchange numbers but that is a very different unit with one piece casings. Does anyone know if there were bearings different to the 1500 used in the 1800 Coupe gearboxes? I know the input shaft is different (smaller spline) but does it go further than that?

Hi Michael,

I saw your posting come by. As it happens I have just been sorting the bearings for a 1300 Fulvia S1 coupe gearbox and a 1600 S2 gearbox. I used that spreadsheet and found it has errors. Not Lucas his fault. He is the friendly and helpful messenger.

I ended up carefully cross checking with the appropriate parts books which turned my brain into a collecton of spinning bearings. I am not sure I have everything right.

Most bearings are standard. The end bearings are not. That is for Fulvia. I don't know about Flavia.

If I understand it right, I will receive an adapted XLS sheet when done?
Thanks in advance.

Pos 18 is different for the listed types according to the partsbook.

Hi Huib. Thanks for the advice. I found the spreadsheet useful for updating the standard bearings to recent manufacturers numbers but it only had fields for the 819 series which is a very different unit to the split case four speed 815 unit. I too am learning as I go and I will provide a list of bearings and seal numbers once I have all the correct parts in one place. I get the feeling most Flavia owners leave their gearboxes alone or replace tired units with better ones. Unfortunately that option is not available here and I have to fix what I have. There was a cheap Flavia box for sale in South Africa but it may be as bad as the one I have got.

I work mostly on Fulvia gearboxes with an occasional Flavia and Flaminia gearbox.
After ultrasonic cleaning all parts one can here quite well which bearings have to be replaced. Hardly ever do I replace one. Usually only the one for the flange at the left half axle. This is a standard low cost bearing.

As it happens, I now have a 4 speed gearbox which needs more new bearings. Very unusual. Maybe it never had an oil change. The synchro's were all good (above 1 mm).
