what rims for my S 1 ?
what rims for my S 1 ?
I am the happy owner of a S1 coupe Rallye S type 818360 issued november 1970 (late S1 which I beleive were already fitted with the 818303 engine)
it is fitted with steel rims stamped 6J14 (which have given normal service for years...)
As I would be pleased to fit alloy rims, I wander if I choose 13 ou 14 inches rims, as I beleive the normal S1 coupe cars were fitted with 13 inches rims
Can anyone give informations about the standard fittment ?
Thanks

Re: what rims for my S 1 ?
hello georges-the standard rims for S 1 cars are 4,5x14 the 13 inch rims are only for the S 1 HF 1,6 fanalone-If you want to use them you will get troubles with the brakes or You use spacers-regards josef
Re: what rims for my S 1 ?
Thank you Joseph, now it's clear I know what to do for my car.
However, and just for increasing my knowledge, I understand that the 13 inches rims are not suitable with the standards breaks (Dunlop) on S 1 coupés
So do you know if this means there were different break models on 1300 HF ?
and also about rims and tyres, as 13 inches rims are smaller, the circumference is shorter, with effect on the speedometer ?
Best regards

Of the S1 cars, only the Fanalone came with 13" alloys (6 x 13); all of the others came on steel 4.5 x 14. But the brake calipers are the same for all S1, so 13" wheels will fit on any S1. The biggest problem is the width; over 5.5" wide, the tires can rub the wheel arches, unless you're using smaller diameter race tires.
But to your real question--whether to go with 13" or 14" alloys--I'd suggest going with 14", as it's much easier to get tires in 14" these days. It is very tough to find good tires in 13" in the correct height.

Re: what rims for my S 1 ?
The S1 (any in fact) Fulvia runs best on the original steel wheels with the original tyre size. Bridgestone makes an excellent 145/80R14 tire. It has to be inflated to a somewhat higher than usual pressure. I use 2.2 to 2.4 bar.
If you insist on changing to 13" rims you can use 165/80R13 tyres. Plenty of good tyres are available in this size. The circumference is the same as for the 145R14.
With some types of the 13" wheels you will have interference with the brake callipers and the pincher of the handbrake. This can be solved by grinding some off the callipers. Also make sure there is clearance between the brake lines and the wheels.
At the rear you will also have interference with the wheel arches. When you use the Stilauto 5,5J13 wheels with 165/80R13 tyres you have to extend the rubber stop over the rear axle by 45 mm. I also advise stronger rear springs. With the standard springs the rear axle will hit the stop all the time which shortens the life time of mechanical parts such as the wheel bearings and body. If you use 6J13 wheels, you will have to extend the rubber stop even more.

Re: what rims for my S 1 ?
Huib's quite right about being able to find correct tire sizes for 13" tf you're trying to match the original 145/80-14. 165/80-13 is just slightly (3.5mm) taller than the original, but that's mostly within margin of error. (My comments about it being difficut to find appropriate 13" tires reflects the fact that in my case I'm trying to match an original tire size of 175/80-13, and that size is virtually impossible to find)
But Huib's also completely right that the original wheel/tire size is generally the best for road use. Wider wheels/lower profile tires will add some lateral grip, but not enough to make up for the loss of delicacy and crispness in the steering feel. IMHO.

Re: what rims for my S 1 ?
Some S1 Zagato cars had 13" steel rims and several 1.3HF's raced with these.
Check the ET (offset) before fitting - you may not need spacers. Huib is correct the Fanalone wheels will fit S1 rear Dunlop brakes but the handbrake calipers get in the way - 1.6HF had modified arms.
I use 185/60R13 on my racing 1.6HF and can go to 205/60R13 but you need Gp4 wheel arch extensions as these can get very tight on the front during steering.
If you have money to burn then Campagnolo rims came in 13" 5.5J and 6J as well as 14"
Huib is also right about the 145/80R14 tyres - these are std fit on my 100mpg Audi A2 1.2 TDI and I have a set for the Fulvia when driving to race tracks!
Above all enjoy your car!

Re: what rims for my S 1 ?
185/60R13s will change the effective gearing, as they're much smaller diameter than the original 175/70R13s. Fine for racing, but not so good for the street.
Re: what rims for my S 1 ?

And I tryed to find a seller in Italy or here in France, but could not find anyone
So I decided not to order
If one of you have any informations about these products, I would be happy to hear what you think
