What Fulvia specific spares do you take on long trips and events?

Unread post by Shaun Pond »

I use my Series 1 1.3 coupe for everyday driving, business trips and for old car events and tours.

I was excavating the trunk this weekend, in preparation for next weekend's "Snowball Rally", and going through what I needed to take for that 500 miles + event.

My Fulvia-specific kit includes:
- a starter solenoid (mainly because I have one)
- a spare fuel pump (ditto)
- a throttle cable
- a clutch cable
- spare set of points and condenser

plus the normal, non-Fulvia specific collection of roadside tools, a small multimeter, fuses, electrical wire, solderless connectors, cable ties, SS safety wire, motor and gearbox oil, WD40, gasket sealant and -- the universal panaceas -- duct tape and JB Weld.

I've been carrying this lot around since I owned the car, as it fits nicely into two small toolbags (the majority of the trunk space is reserved for my navigator's wardrobe).

Is there anything else I should add to the kit, to avoid disgracing the marque by coming home behind a tow truck?

Thanks!

dynamo and voltage regulator; belts.

Loose the starter engine; saves weight and in worst case scenario you can (let) push the car.
A clutch-cable and gas-cable, some fuses, lightbulbs, a can of oil/cooling water/ a small can of gogo-juice and a selection of 'usefull' tools (not the big heavy box, with 10 diffirent hammers and pliers).
In summer you can leave the coolant for mineral water.

If you changed lately the specific ignition stuff (points, cables, rotor, condensor, sparkpluggs), wrap the old ones in a cloth (to clean your hands afterwards) and again, in the boot with it.

Check brake paths, tires (pressure - state; also spare tire) before starting the trip.

Owww, don't forget a jack and a '19', otherwise you'll be stranded by a puncture............

Andrea and Bart, thanks.

My list should have included the belts, the jack & 19mm wrench, and an air pressure gauge. Those have been part of the kit since inception.

I hadn't thought of taking a spare voltage regulator or spare light bulbs, but I can see the sense to those. I do carry routinely jumper cables.

Bart, is the go-go juice for the car, or for the driver?

Thanks again.

On more than one long-drive Lancia meeting, a few friends of ours had a dead voltage regulator (they do wear out). It meant buying several new batteries...Dynamos (and alternators) can also fail unexpectedly (check brushes).
Have fun, Andrea

Last year, during our French invasion with 20 Fulvias, the Swiss equipe had a dead alternator. We swapt every stop from batteries. I think I have a Swiss battery for them moment....which still works!
They would get home, if they didn't blew up their engine....

Last trip (500km) I forgot to make up a nice pack of spares. The S2 berlina had just (1 day) been out repair(wheel bearing broken and headgasket renewal). The only thing what was in the boot: old bearing and 37yr old cracked headgasket. But, no troubles whatsoever. I did have a good rope in the boot, for towing (another) if necessary. Off course!

Well, I do have an old front wheel bearing that I could put in the trunk, but I thought one of the objectives was to keep the weight down.

Actually, my Series 1 Coupe has never stranded me, in three years/30k miles of driving.

But I'm superstitious enough to believe that, if I don't pack some spares, my good luck in this regard will end. And Lancia specialists are pretty thin on the ground around here.

I forgot to mention earlier that my kit includes top and bottom radiator hoses. I think the top one would be hard to find a work-around solution for, were it to fail far from home.

Shaun,
Superstition aside, I'd leave the spare wheel bearing at home; it's not much good without the tools to replace it.

Ed, good point.

I'd have to haul along a vise, a seven foot breaker bar and a ring nut socket as well, and that would be awkward.

Jaan Hjorth's site has a couple of snaps of this activity (http://www.eddinsmoto.com/id118.htm).

Plus, the wheel bearing I've got is knackered anyway. Only good for amazing non-Lancistis with its size, and maybe as a wheel chock.

Bart

I found the most usefull tool to bring along a small 12V lamp with some wire and two crocodile clips. Together with a saw-off nr. 13 spanner the perfect tool for timing the ignition, and, apart from that, ideal for finding all sorts of electrical faults.

With a 10 and 13mm spanner and a screwdriver you can do most Fulvia repairs anyway.
