Hot Rod Fluvia

Unread post by Ralph de Masi »

In the great tradition of California hot rodders has any one ever given thought to installing a 2 liter F.I. Flavia engine in a Fulvia. Are the bell housing bolt ups the same? I don't know the weight of the motor but it should have a lower center of gravity than the V4. Also I'm not certain how the front of the Flavia motor is mount as opposed to the Fulvia motor.

The fuel injected Flavia gave 126HP and 17.4kgm of torque compared to 101/13.3 for the 1.3HF and 114/15.6 for the 1600HF 2nd Series. The Flavia posts these figures at lower RPM ranges as well. I don't know that the Flavia engine could be easily backyard modified to create even more horsepower as you'd have to fiddle with the fuel injection and that's probably done mechanically via a rod with various depressions.

But if you had the money and time.................................

Note* All HP & torque figures taken from Brian Long's book, "Lancia Sporting Coupes"

cumaan man !!! , you gotta drop a 283c.u. chevy or a 289 Ford in it, or you can't lay claim to diddly !
(it is possible only Americans will understand this text) .
Ya goota do it right... even if it becomes undrivable.....
Bob Grossmann (NY Hot-RodderTVR jammed a Ford V8 in a Grantura ( i think that was the TVR ) & made a "monster"; someone put a Ford V8 in a little Sunbeam & made a Tiger & someone else (again NY) but a V8 amidship in a Mini........so now you are "up at bat" & "weeze acounting on you to getta hit".
Anything less than a V8 will not qualify you for the Smokie Yunick Prize !!!

I was hoping to keep it in the family but as long as the lock is off the gate, you could stretch it and use a Ferrari....I mean Lancia V6 from the Stratos. Beyond that and I'm not sure you'll have the transaxle working past one week.

There should be some rotten Dino coupes you could borrow from.

Lancia used that American V8's as windscreen wiper motor. ;-b

As for Lucas, well...what should I say ? He's not American, so he can't understand ! ha ha ha

On the subject of V8's in a Fulvia, Ruggerio Giannini once told me, his family firm fitted their own alloy V8 into a Fulvia in the early 70's. It weighed less than the V4 and produced 160hp! What a weapon that would have been in a HF with Munari at the wheel. Unfortunately, Fiat didn't want to develop the idea any further.

There was a rumor that at one point in the 1960's Lancia actually made a V-10 prototype. Supposedly, someone showed up at Cavalitto's with it one day in a Flaminia. Strange things can happen - I wonder if it was true.

By 1972, the works Fulvias were getting over 160hp from the 1.6L V4.

and were running on the ragged edge of reliability. The 160hp was from a box stock engine with plenty of scope for further development.Ed Levin wrote:

I have no information about whether a Flavia motor would fit a Fulvia. But, if you have the money and the time, why not adapt a modern fuel injection system to the Fulvia instead?

There'd be no problems with dimensional fit or weight. And there are a number of high performance, small displacement engines with fuel injection systems readily available for inspiration and appropriate as parts sources (e.g., most any open class 4 cylinder sport bike).

It would be a lot of work, of course. But probably less than trying to fit the Flavia's boxer motor into the Fulvia's bay.
