gemmer steering box HF?
I need to identify a spare Gemmer Fulvia steering box. It is RHD (I think) and has LA9 stamped on it. It also has V 5(?) 0. It is 3 and a bit turns lock to lock.
Maybe this is for Neil Cundy as his is accessible to look at (please)

Re: gemmer steering box HF?
Might not help much I'm afraid. Mine has V50 stamped on it but looking at the S1 TAVs that is the general type not the version. It also has LA5 stamped on it but this is not a number I can find in the TAV, but LA9 does appear a couple of times and only seems to relate to the RHD Fanalone?? The S2 TAV has different part numbers to the S1 and has LA9 referenced on both 1.6 and 1.3 versions !!!!
I think the 3 turns lock to lock is the key I think.

I'm with Neil; sounds like an RHD Fanalone box. And those do exist, though in what numbers is unclear. One of the classic car mags speculated that there were about 25 or so imported to the UK. But they found their way to Oz, too; the cover photo on the Brooklands Books Lancia Fulvia Gold Portfolio is of an RHD Fanalone with NSW plates.

Thanks for this info. Did a Fanaloni box differ from a fanalini (1600 HF)??

Assuming they are similar to those fitted to the saloons and 1300 coupes than only internally with the thrust bush arrangement. This is a bronze bush on the S1 cars but a horrible nylon type thing on the S2 cars that destroys itself leaving you with no slack adjustment over time. Straight foward to convert to a bronze bush although a pig of a job to get the arm off.

You are talking about the idler box no? I have modified one idler with bronze bushes for my sport as it had an appetite for the nylon bushes. You are right about getting the arm off. The first one I managed to get it off myself, but I am having another upgraded with S1 style greas nipple by my local machine shop - when they get round to it....
I was asking on the steering box??

Hello.
I know for certain that the drop arms are different S1/S2 as the ball joints have different tapers. What I cannot remember is if the output shafts, i.e. the shafts that accept the drop arm are the same.
As for the casting number, all the S2 1600 steering boxes I have seen have LA9 cast into the case. 1300s read LA10. LA8 I recall was a Flavia. Next chance I have I'll look at the LHD Fanalone box I removed from the car I am working on intermittently.

Output shafts are the same. They accept any of the arms.
There is indeed a difference between S1 and S2 arms. I have always wondered about the early S2. Early S2 cars have S1 track rods.
