Haven't posted for a long time as work on the fulvia has been a bit slow recently. I did get some time last week to attend to pulling the gearbox off, a new clutch, machined flywheel, thrust bearing, main crank seal, and whatever the bearing in the end of the crank that picks up the gearbox shaft will hopefully all make a nice difference. I do have some questions however:
1. As the car has been sitting for some time should I split the gearbox and reseal it (It wasn't leaking previously but I haven't driven the car for literally years).
2. The car would pop out of reverse. Is this something do do with adjusting the reverse lock-out pin and linkage, or is this likely to be something more major?
3. Are there any other tips concerning optimizing the gear shift by changing any of the linkage components? (I already run fully synthetic gear oil in the box which makes a huge difference to cold gear changes)
Any advice appreciated.
Gearbox questions
Re: Gearbox questions
Dear Christopher,
I don't really understand what you mean by "pop out of reverse", due to my limited english language.
However, I also work a bit slowly for "waking up" a fulvia, after the car passed various years parked.
One of the first surprises was the reverse gear impossible to engage; the 5 other gears were OK.
No greasing, nor moving strongly the lever or directly the selector onto the box changed anything.
I had to give the car to a garage, for opening the box. Due to inactivity, the internal axle maintaining the forks, was hardly rusted, forbiding any movement from neutral to reverse.Fortunately it was possible to clean out the corrosion allowing the free movement again.
If this is the symptom you have, I'm affraid that you must open the box.
Through my experience,if you want also to change some components, beware the total coast!
(mine is a fulvia 1600hf, and parts are extremely expensives. For the total cost of renewing I could have bought 5 to 10 second hand boxes) .

Re: Gearbox questions
pop out means when a gear (or something else) moves itself 'quickly & surprisingly 'when this movement is unwanted & undesirable. Most peaple with popping.out reverses just hold them in with their hand.
"hardly rusted" ? I think you mean "very-rusted" ?
" hardly rusted means "rusted only a little".
In any case, this is very surprising.
Listen up, every 1 with a dormant Fulvia......get the lead out of your butt & drive your beauty's.
At least sometimes, so they don't get rusty forks...or rusty brake discs or or or
Paul21...do you want to tell us the total cost of renewing ?
Paul 21 (do I remember that you are french?)...except for English & some German, I wouldn't know how to say "not rusted", "totally rusted", "hardly-rusted"...so don't think I am criticizing. your English.
Your English It readss fine to me !
Man, it sure too a long time to figure out how to spell criticizing & I should know.
I guess I'm like everyones Fulvia...just getting older ( & rustier).

Re: Gearbox questions
Dear Jogo48,
thanks for your explaination on "pop out",I understand better the problem on the box of Christopher's Fulvia.
For this little problem, I agree that it's enough just holding the lever in with the hand . Mine had a problem due to the very rusted internal axle . I know this is surprising, but after some years using the car, I stored the car in 1991. The car was stored in quite good conditions (dry garage ), protected and some times I connected a battery and started the engine. Naturally, the master cylinder perished during all this time but this was not really a surprise. Concerning the box, I stored the car with the good level of oil in the box, but I didn't change this oil since buying the car in 1982. May be this oil had yet losen its anti-rust properties before the storage. The evident result opening the box was as I yet explained but also corrosion on various other parts , including on the teeth of the conical cog.
How much? I have hereunder the invoice and will intend to translate (beware, some mechanicals terms are not evident to translate for me) : keeping the box out of the car , complete disassembling of the box, hub of synchro 4th gear, synchro rings 2nd and 4th gear, springs of synchro hub,one ball bearing, machining of a spacer for adjusting the play of the 4th cog, all paper seals, spi gaskets' reassembling the box.
Hours 17.25 x 52 € = 897 €, parts 1160.65, transport of parts 45€ , adjusting parralelism 52€ (I asked for)
VAT 422.31€ total of the invoice:2576.96€ ( the parts were supplied by Cavalitto to my mechanics garage)
Happy?
I not really, but now the reverse works, all synchro are OK, the 4th gear locks well (by the past it "popped out") ...
I hope I will have now only working time for me to awake my fulvia, the level of money available on the gauge went down quikly by this time ( I was quite silent concerning this matter with my cherised wife...)

Re: Gearbox questions
thank you Paul 21. I am laughing at the wife comment ( I agree) , crying at your empty wallet, smiling at your fine & clear translation, CHOKING at € 52 + Vat per hour ! Not to mention the total cost !! YIKES !!!!
