Transmission oil leak revisited

Unread post by Peter Cripps »

Some time ago I asked about a transmission oil leak:

This thread

Well, this afternoon I finally got round to taking a look. The M6 bolts were not broken, but they were barely finger tight ... not sure if this could be the problem?

The splines do have some play, not much, but I can just detect movement. So does that mean that the copper shim is intended to move slightly to take up this play? In which case, it seems a bit optimistic to think that oil is going to stay on the spline side of the shim, and not leak into the CV joint.

Or is the shim and the pair of M6 bolts supposed to lock everything solid? Somehow those parts look a bit flimsy for that task?

Well, I've stopped the leak ... at least for the time being!

I cleaned all surfaces, and annealed the copper disc, as Paul suggested in the other thread. Then I reassembled everything, this time tightening the M6 bolts so they were good and snug. I also drained all the transmission oil out of the CVJ and repacked it with grease.

It remains to be seen how long this will last! But, for now, the garage floor is dry.
