Wont stay in 1st and 3rd gear

Unread post by mikeg »

Noticed yesterday when I was backing out of the garage (Series 1 Rallye with manual transmission) there was a bit of clutch shudder. Then I discovered it would not stay in both first and third gears. Any clues what has happened?

It is still driveable but I have to hold the gear leaver in first and third initially. I can still select all gears but the lever has no "resistance" when I put it into first and third gear. The gearbox and clutch were recently rebuilt.

Remove the dust cover and look what happens, probably the gear lever or the mechanism is against the metal tunnel.

As Lucas says, check if it hits the tunnel. If so, it may be due to a bad or missing mounting rubber or much worse a subframe or sills that have rusted away.

It sounds however that the spring loaded steel ball is missing in the fork mechanism.

Thanks Lucas and Huib.

I am now wondering if it is in fact the detent spring which has failed. Meaning the gearbox has to come apart to fix?
Are these springs still available?

Thanks,

Might be the steel ball. Better check first. The springs are simple push springs. I don't hnow if the spring for 1 and 3 is the same as for 2 and 4. You could check the parts book.

Well, I took the car for a drive over the weekend and after much gearshifting, it appears to be much better in third gear (does not drop out of gear).

But it still is loose in first gear. It has improved so that it is now intermittent - say 50-50, with it staying in gear sometimes and the lever being easily moved at other times.

Perhaps it will improve with more driving? As this is first gear, I can probably live with this minor problem as the majority of driving is done using the other gears.

The gearbox was rebuilt in the last year and I have only travelled 100-200km since then.

Cheers,

Mike
