flavia coupe kugelfischer injection
I have the option to buy a 18 injection, nice car, not run for some time. The production figures are very low, and the reputation for problems with this systemgoes before it. Should I miss it, is it possible to convert to carbs ie are the bits available without too many probs second hand., or should Igo for it. I am not a complete numpty when it comes to restoration and good workshop facilities are available. the car is priced at 3000 euros. any suggestions gratefully received by a flavia virgin. Hi Colin
I have just caught up with your post and I guess you have bought the car (or not) by now. The fuel injection system is not inherently unreliable and is mechanical so can be rebuilt if necessary. Long periods of inactivity will mean the perishable seals will have suffered but as long as the mechanism turns freely from the pulley there is hope. I have rescued abandoned Alfa Romeo Spica systems with little more than a good external clean and a soak in petrol for a week. There seems to be a reasonable supply of used parts for these systems and I would advise staying with it as the already very smooth Flavia motor runs even more smoothly with it if my friend's 2000HF is any indication (although I think that is a Bosche system)
Good luck

prior to answering colins ? I think a lot more details are needed.
alternative: Gamma Coupe S1 or S2; the UK located silver Coupe might still be available; check lanciagammaforum.com for lots of details

general rule if it has been left alone not meddled with it'll probably be fine if it runs OK don't worry about it. i'd have an injection flavia over a carb any day although the 2000HF is probably the best and most simple with bosch d jetronic. Kugelfischer was used in many thousands of peugeots in the 60s it's not inherently a bad system!

Re: flavia coupe kugelfischer injection
Colin,
I hadan 819 fuel injected sedan years ago. Couldn't get it to rev above an idle. Turned out that the fine springs in the suction check valves along the bottom of the injector pump block had corroded away due to accumulation of water in the suction gallery. Also the fuel filter was full of water. After sorting all that out, it was a brilliant car. Totally different to its carburetted cousin. The injectors and other parts are shared by the Peugeots and BMWs of that era, so you should be able to find spares.
If the springs in the injectors themselves are worn, they will 'dribble' fuel causing rough idling etc.
Also note that the pump chamber requires a constant viscosity oil; I think it was Esso Univis.
Meanwhile, a carburetted Flavia 2000 has just been added to the stable. The Aurelia B12 is tolerating it!
Cheers.
Brian.

Re: flavia coupe kugelfischer injection
If you bought the car, change the oil in the Kugelfisher
If the seals get older they start to leak a bit and fuel will get into the oil, which off course reduces its efficiency, You can even smell it.
It needs a constant viscosity oil as Brian said.
Esso changed the name since the Flavia was current
It is now Esso Univis 15N
Alternatives BP SHF-LT15
Shell Fluid 4 or Fluid 41
Where to get? Nearly nowhere in automotive land but in drumloads at any general aviation airfield
I run my Flavia Coupe Iniezione for 10 years now without trouble it has done 225,000 km on what I believe is still the original unit.
If the Kugelfischer is broke you can get a reconditioned unit on an exchange basis from the firm of Koller + Schwemmer in Nuernberg Germany
they are on the web, costs € 1500,- approx.

Re: flavia coupe kugelfischer injection
Thank you for your help and advice. Have just returned from the UK after3 week trip.I did the Goodwood revival and some lovely examples of Lancias but I didn't spot a Flavia coupe though, Iwill keep you informed of progress on car hunt, the car above is not on the market as such, but is known to a friend etc etc. regards Colin Newby
