Hi
Am looking for suitable replacement (new) oil cooler for the 1.6 Fulvia. Thinking about warm english summers and hot racing environments!
Anyone tried Motul? What size? Is there any benefit to having a thermostat or manual gate for the cooler? Worth paying extra for aeroquip style connectors or just stick with standard hoses and circlips?
Cheers

Re: 1.6 Oil Cooler options
I am assuming that you already have the original Lancia take-off for an oil cooler. This is superior to the accessory "sandwich plate" because the flow is much better. The thermostat incorporated comes in at a slightly low temperature however - I think that 16V Integrales and Evos have a similar type thermostat that operates at a higher temperature.
A thermostat is essential. Modern oils should run at at least 100 degrees - they are designed that way.
On my own car I used an oil radiator from a Delta HF Turbo - it works well.

Re: 1.6 Oil Cooler options
I agree with Paul. And I would also make sure the oil thermometer is correct. If there is a thermostat there should also be a thermometer whether it is water or oil. A thermostat that opens too early is a good recipe for blowing an engine.
On the S1 rallye 1.3S cars I usually take the oil cooler off if the car is used for normal driving. Leaving it on after 40 years means one has to overhaul the whole circuit including thermostat and install a thermometer.
On the S2 1300's and even the S2 1600 there wasn't an oil cooler. Apparently Lancia did not think it necessary for normal use. With modern oils it is even less necessary.

Tx guys
paul do you have any pics of the HF Delta set up you use?
maybe you could email them. Seems like most of the oil is in the extra long pipes to take it round the back of the engine to the cooler!

Re: 1.6 Oil Cooler options
Is there anything wrong with long pipe runs?? Seem to remember ferrari and porsche ran from back to front and back again. I used a mocal (10 row?) rad and made up the brackets to fit fulvia. mocal units are much more space effiecient than the old fitment. I am now worried about the thermostat issue and I hope Paul can advise.

Re: 1.6 Oil Cooler options
Hello,
Not at the moment - I might be able to do something soon, but the front of my car is not standard... However the Delta cooler is small. All these coolers fitted to Themas etc., are good quality and much better than the originals - also much lighter.

Re: 1.6 Oil Cooler options
I don't think that the Mocal fitting flows as well as the original.
Normally Mocal always makes it clear that a thermostat is essential and they do supply them.

Re: 1.6 Oil Cooler options
I can confirm the the HF oil filter base that I bought recently on ebay did have a funtioning thermostat inside it! It looks like a long aa battery and is waxstat technology it is fully open at c 80 deg C. I have gone to my local hydraulic shop and they supplied hose and fittings which match the lancia 1.5mm thread!! This will go to the existing 10 row Mocal rad. I also found the pressure relief valve was still to operate so I am glad I stripped it all down. Paul is right about about the design of the HF filter mount being very sympathetic to the oil flow (its a beautiful piece of machining and casting! Paul is also right about Mocal and thermostats and theirs operate also at 80 deg (no apparent option on their website). When the car is back together I will report if I have solved the cold running.

Re: 1.6 Oil Cooler options
Just to report the car has now got an HF oil filter mount with oil cooler take offs to a mocal rad.
Ran the car rapidly round the back lanes and was pleased to see the oil temp gauge move towards 100. oil pipes to rad were still cool. I know the oil stat in the filter mount operates as I heated the mount in an oil bath and saw the stat move to open at about 80-85 deg C so I guess I am not getting it hot on that short run and water guage stays below middle. However the flat spot (which I put down to a cool engine) has all but disappeared.
Bonus is that this mount has a more sophisticated pressure relief valve and stronger spring and oil pressure is much improved!!!
