synthetic lubricants for 1,6

Unread post by Ed Levin »

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but what is the collective wisdom regarding synthetic lubricants for the 818.540 engine & gearbox? I've heard some conflicting information on this.

Reminds me of the chap in the VSCC who races a 1932 supercharged MG.

He uses 0W-30 oil (as used in very modern BMWs and the like) and has no problems - and probably gets a bit more power.

Hello Ed / Hello P. de R.
might this question also apply for 1.3 motor / gearbox ; assuming that what is good for 1 fulvia engine / box is good for the other fulvia engine / box ? Would be nice to have opinion (s) before next oil change !

Hello Jogo.

Well Lancia did specify different oils for the 1300 and 1600 so presumably there is some difference though I cannot see what it might be. In any case oils of the early 1970s were very different from what we have today - such factors as shear stength, heat tolerance, ant-sluging and so on are far and away advanced.

I always used Agip Racing 10W-60 in my own car, but I suspect it was probably a waste of money. There is a case for synthetic oils with turbo-charged engines (to protect the turbo) however if you can afford it buy the best - it's always cheaper than a new engine!

If my Fulvia's engine was a "little" less leaky, I think I would try the VSCC man's recipe - but I'll try anything once.

I just completed the restoration of Tina, one of my 1967 1.3 coupes. This included a total engine rebuild including weighing, balancing, porting, flowing and fine tuning of line bore. Right from the start I use 5W40 Shell Ultra fully synthetic oil.
I have done some 1400 km's now and the engine does extremely well. Oil pressure is at full scale from 2000 rpm onwards with hot engine.
There is still an oil leak to fix. It is not leaking from the obvious places such as crankshaft oil seals nor fuel pump nor the oil seal in the rev counter sender. I think the sump may have a microcrack.

Thank you all for the quick precise reply...1 more ? or maybe 2 more ?
although I think I already know the answer to # 1 - if keeping the same brand / spec oil & having less than 1500km in 2 years on the oil, should the filter also be changed ?
# 2 - I am assuming that changing the oil with so few km is still a good idea because of the time since last change...although car not driven in rain nor parked in damp place.

Jogo: If you haven't changed the oil in 2 years, change it now and replace the filter--no matter how few kms you've driven.

Huib: Thanks for sharing your experience with the synthetics. I think that a 5W- is probably too thin for my 1,6 (and it never gets very cold where I am), but I was thinking of using a synthetic 10W40, which is closer to the 20W50 (nonsyn) original viscosity recommendation.

I use a synthetic oil in the gearbox. It really helps with making the gear change less obstructive when cold, which can only be good for the gearbox. It was a Valvoline product but I can't recall the grade. I think it was a tip I picked up from a Lancia club newsletter from a long time ago.

Yes a synthetic is a good idea for the gearbox. The Fulvia's box aborbs quite a lot of power owing to the hypoid final drive (rather than spiral bevel used in many cars) and as you say one does not have the "stiction" problem on cold mornings.

There have been rumours that Mobil's synthetic gear oil attacked the bronze synchro rings. I used Amsoil's oil (as used in Benetton F1 cars) Motul or Agip products without problems; I am sure that there are others.

I am by no means an oil expert. On the contrary I am rather simple minded. I figure oil does never get any thicker when heated up. It always becomes thinner when heated up. Or looking at it the other way, oil always becomes thicker when the temperature is lowered. When at engine temp a 5W40, a 10W40 and a 15W40 are equally thin. When these cool down again, all three become thicker. The 5W40 just becomes less thicker than the 15W40.

On the matter of originality, it is difficult to see if an oil was specified because it was exactly right or the best available at the time
