numbers on cam followers?

There are numbers 46 and 48 (s3 1.3 Fulvia) on all my cam followers , what does these numbers mean? on a different engine i saw different numbers (41 and something ,i think)

I would think that they are simple serial numbers from the forging tools.

I have seen this on con-rods - on 1600s for example those with suffix "3" are quite a bit heavier than those suffixed "4".
