What year GT do I have??

Unread post by Steven Hale »

I have become a recent Lancia owner and I already am puzzled! The car I was told is a 1961, but without a title, what are the things to look for in determining the year, like dash switches etc.

82400-1096
Touring 6439

Any help is appreciated.

Nice choice, Steven.

Lancia didn't really designate Flaminias with model years. They sold them whenever they finally sold and the dealer called it whatever year was the current year. Your chassis number suggests that it is a very early example of the Touring GT, from 1960.

As far as I know, there are no cosmetic distinctions between the 1960 and 1961 vintage GTs. I believe they all used the same dash switches. The easy way to tell that you have a pre-1962 car is the turn indicator and main beam telltales. If there are three separate little chrome discs set into the dash, you have a pre-1962 car. If there is a single triangular-shaped unit with different lighted sectors, you have a later car. Mechanically, the one big distinction that comes to mind is the rear inboard axle joints. The early cars used the Aurelia-type pot joint that runs in heavy oil while the later cars used a joint that runs with grease. This yields a major maintenance difference as the later joints require much less attention. The change was made in 1961 but I don't know if it was made as part of a model year revamp or just as a typical Lancia running production change. Anybody else know?

That would make sense, as I found information online of a SS Zagato with the serial 8****-1107 that was built on 10/26/59. Mine is also void of front side makers.
Randy, I notice that you have restored/owned many GT's. Did you document your restorations? If so, I would appreciate any insight on this daunting project. My junk email is ice_floe2@yahoo.com and I will respond with my "real" email.

Thanks for your help

No, Steven, I haven't restored any Flaminias. I just love 'em and try to keep them going if I get one that's already going. My Touring Flaminia experience is limited to my 1961 convertible, which is going and a fairly nice car but sometime soon needs an engine overhaul due to its general tiredness, and a 1962 Touring coupe which I wish was going but isn't and now looks like it never will under my ownership because of the energy needed to keep my others going. The "others" are a very nice 1960 PF coupe and a 1958 berlina which is giving me the business right now but I'll eventually sort it or have someone else sort it for me. The dry Southern California climate permits my haphazard method of classic car ownership. Unfortunately, the expensive Southern California real estate prevents me having all of the garaging I need at home.

It looks like Florian's photos will be a good resource for your project.

Your GT was made in October 1959, I think it was originally with black paint and light brown leather ( may be useful for you ?)
You have to be sure that the same number is on the blue factory plate, AND in the métal of the right body front because the plate could coming from an another car.
The Touring number is not very useful because it's a serial number spécifc for Touring manufactory but for all the cars coming from Touring ( Fiat, Lancia, Aston-Martin,etc.. ) ; all documents from Touring have been burn ! when the manucfatury stopped !!!

Hello Steven,
Sorry but I think you have not receive my e-mail ( I have receive three times an error message ? why ?
If the number of your car is good ( 82400 1096 ) I confirm the black paint and the light brown leather inside originally.
In fact, I was in discussion with a people from the centro historic in italy for my own interests and I have ask for him about your car.
Have you check the number in the wing front body ?
My cars are convertible 2,8 and zagato 2,5 3c
Best regards.

Hello Steven
In 1959 the supersporst was not built ; the first supersport was sold in February 1965 to Marcello Mastroianni, and recently sold in auction at Monaco.
And in October 1959 the car with the body number 824 00 1107 was not a zagato sport but a gt Touring !
Best regards
