Hubcaps for Appia Furgoncino or Aurelia B10 / B21

Unread post by Alan Wesson »

Hi - I am looking for a set of new or excellent used hubcaps for my newly acquired Appia Furgoncino. The van is in excellent condition (although it needs paint), and I am restoring it to concours or near-concours condition. The only cosmetic part it needs is a set of hubcaps - all 4 were dented and scratched beyond repair (because they stick out so far!), and I would like to replace them with some really nice ones. As far as I can tell they seem to be identical to the ones fitted to Aurelia B10 and B21 cars, but if you know differently please tell me (it seems likely, because Appia vans had Aurelia front suspension!). I wouldn't mind a set of Appia S1 parking lights as well - I have a spare new set and a set on my S1 (see story on Viva Lancia in the 'interesting letters' section), but the set on the S1 is a bit crazed, so it would be great if I could get a perfect second set and then I can put the new ones on the van and replace the ones on the S1 as well - so let me know if you have any you want to sell! Cheers and thanks in advance - Alan Wesson

Alan,

Have you tried Cavalitto's in Turin they appear to be a treasure chest of spares for the older cars.

You can use the link from the front page of this site or via Jack Romano editor of the Lancia England magazine.

Hi Alan,

I suppose you are the man who bought the furgoncino which was sitting in a yard in Settimo Vittone, between Turin and Aosta, is that right? Good luck with it, I am restoring a camioncono, just as much fun, but my car was in terrible condition.

Just for your information: the hub caps are identical to those of Aurelia B10/22and B20 up to the 5th series. Cavalitto in Turin (+39-011-4375860) has them new. On all furgoncinos & camioncinos, front axle is Aurelia B24 spider. Other identical Aurelia parts are brake wheel cylinders, brake master cylinder and rear shock absorbers (with slightly different setting). I have a furgoncino parts book as well as owners manual, which can be copied, if you wish. I do have already a copied Appia workshop manual available, plus an Appia saloon parts book which should be used together with the furgoncino book.

Please let me know, like to share experiences.

Hi Wim

Nice to hear from you - I of course feel I know you already because I have
your books and read of you often!

Yes, you're right that it was the van in Settimo - I was on the Via Appia
run and took a detour to look at it, and it was too good to miss (even
though I was in an Appia at the time and obviously couldn't take it home
with me immediately!). I paid a deposit and came back to fetch it as far as
France in August (we are restoring a house in Die, in the Drome Valley, and
David Molyneaux, another English Lancista with a house in the Ardeche, lent
me his trailer to fetch the van from Settimo to Die, where it sat from
August until three weeks ago.

We are very lucky we didn't have the van on the trailer behind our
Thema when we returned from France at the end of August, because
we had a tyre burst on the motorway, hit the barrier and rolled over,
and then went back across the motorway on the roof and hit the
barrier the other side! This was near Dijon, so we hadn't even
gone far! Luckily, none of us (4 of us!) were even injured (Themas are
strong cars!).

I went back again with our remaining Thema last month to fetch it the rest
of the way to England, so now it is in my garage being restored. It is a
fairly easy job because it has very little rust and almost no dents, but the
engine is seized because the cylinder head was split when it was left in the
yard at Settimo in 1980, and the engine has had water in it ever since. I
would like to save the block if I can because it has C80S... as the engine
number, and if I put a replacement block on it that will be most unlikely,
because a spare engine will have to come from an S2 or S3 Appia saloon (I
have a spare S3 engine already), so we are working hard at saving it. The
top end is very good, but the camshafts are stuck, so we will remove the
engine from the van and try to remove them on the bench. It is annoying,
though, because unless we can turn the engine we can't get it off the
gearbox, which as far as I know doesn't need to come out of the car itself.

Apart from these minor troubles, which I think will actually be fairly easy
to fix (I have Tim Jewell, a Lancista of many years' standing, helping me -
his father was Ron Jewell, who died about 12 years ago, but had Lambdas,
Aurelias, Appias and Fulvias, as well as other Lancias, from the 60s
onwards, so Tim has a lot of knowledge and experience and many useful Lancia
tools!).

The rust is very minor - I removed the left-hand rear wing last night, which
is the only part of the van where there is any rust at all, and I was
pleasantly surprised how easily it came off, and how solid the area behind
it is - the only bit that will require welding is the box at the lower rear
of the wing, just inside the rear bumper, on the left side - the right side
is perfect and not even holed.

Mechanically, apart from the water in the engine, I think it will be very
good, because it only has 59000 km on it and I think that is probably
genuine. Its only owner before Sg. Muraro, the person I bought it from, was
an elderly optician from Aosta, who seemed to use it for small trips and
local deliveries. And even though it has stood outside in the mountains for
23 years the rust hasn't taken a hold and the interior is perfect - the
steering wheel has the usual cracks, and it is dirty, but there are no tears
to the upholstery or rubber mats or door panels, and even the instrument
binnacle is not cracked - Don Cross told me he bought several of those
unused in boxes a few years ago, and even they were cracked! But despite the
efforts of the hot sun for all these years it has stayed O.K.

I am hoping to come to the British AGM in the van next year, and definitely
on the next Sliding Pillar rally in Belgium in 2005 - I think the Sliding
Pillar is probably more realistic than the AGM, because I have quite a heavy
workload and so the restoration work will progress quite slowly (I want to
do it really well, too!).

I knew about your Camioncino because I had been told Martin Buckley ran
a piece about it in Classic Cars magazine, but I haven't seen the article
myself. I too would like to have a Camioncino one day, but I don't think I
will be lucky enough to find one in the same way that I found the van - even
though I like driving round Italy and do so often from the house in Die,
classic Lancias do not jump up at one all the time!

Thanks also for the information about the hubcaps - I was hoping at first
that they were S1 Appia wheels, because I have a large number of those. I
suspected, as you say, that they were Aurelia hubcaps, but I didn't know
that Cavalitto had them - I shall go and see him when we go on the next ski
trip in February, because Turin is only 300 km from our house (this is a
large reason we bought it!) and it will give me an excuse to miss another
day's ski-ing!!

I also didn't know that the front axle was B24 - that would be bad news if I
needed one, because B24 parts aren't usually cheap! However, I don't think
anything will go wrong with it unless I am very unlucky!

I asked Don Cross to look in his Furgoncino parts book last week on the
telephone, to see what the brake parts were (obviously I will have to do the
brakes!) and Don told me all the parts #s were the same as Appia S2! Are
they perhaps the same as Aurelia as well? It would be very unfortunate
to buy the wrong set of brake parts!!

I appreciate very much you offer to help with copies of parts books etc. - I
have already got Appia saloon workshop manuals and a parts book (eBay!), but
no van ones, so I would be very grateful if you would copy the van books at
some time for me!

I had better stop now - I am supposed to be working!

Best wishes

Alan Wesson

Thanks Simon - I hadn't thought of Cavalitto for those, although I have bought mechanical parts off him! I shall definitely give him a call - and he seems a helpful and reasonable guy as well! Best wishes - Alan

Thanks to Wim and others for the help with the hubcaps etc. - I have now got those and all the other parts I need, and we are hoping to have my Furgoncion ready in time for this year's International Sliding Pillar Rally. It will be a struggle, and there is a likelihood that the van will be running but not pretty (i.e. still in primer), but we are going to try to make it in time.

Mirco, if you need help or advice with parts I can probably help you, as I located everything I needed for mine in the end! The most helpful people are Don Cross of the Appia Consortium and Enrico at Cavalitto (number above), but if you are still stuck with anything I will try to help you out.

Don't forget that the front and rear brakes, and front suspension, are Aurelia B24 Spider, and the rear suspension is ??? (my guess is Jolly Van - anyone know better - luckily there was nothing wrong with mine, so I didn't need to find out!).

Best wishes and thanks again

Alan
