Y10 Engine cutting out

Unread post by Leo Capaldi »

Hi,
My 1989 Y10 999cc Fire is suffering with the engine cutting out whilst driving along. It only happens when the engine is quite warm (in city traffic). When cooler (on country roads) it is fine. Sometimes it will restart by "bump starting" or sometimes it is neccessary to turn off/on the ignition. All the electric devices keep working including the speedometer and a test light connected to the power at the distributor module stays on when the engine cuts out so it looks like the distributor module is suspect.
Any suggestions or confirmation of the diagnosis?

I had a similar problem with my car but Kitt sorted it out. It was down to the amplifier unit attached to the distributor being faulty.

Also check the wiring, it could just be a bad connection!

Hope that helps.

hi there,
the Y10 of my girlfriend stopped running today with warm engine, and there are only a few bad revs are coming when starting again. There is no periodic Spark at the ignition coil. I removed the distributor but it seems to be mechanically ok. The Induktive Pickup has 800Ohms and generates a voltage while spinning the shaft. Maybe i have also a problem with this amplifier box mounted at the distributor. Is there a chance to check this item? Does anybody has wiring scemes? Or scematics of this amplifier?
Thanks and please excuse my bad english!

Hi,
We sorted my Y10 by re-wiring the end of the cable which connects to the electronic module on the distributor. I don't know if it was the connection between the wires and the connector or if it was the connections inside the connector itself that was the problem. I shortened the cable by about 3cm. I had too dismantle the connector plug by removing the inserts - not too diffiicult using a jewellers screwdriver to push backk the little tabs. Putting it all back together again probably did the contacts some good as well. The wire ends were in good condition so I suspect that squashing the contacts slightly probably did the trick. This is a Ducellier distributor. I think that the electronic bit is probably indestructible. Don't know about the Magneti Marelli version.

Hi,
I've found the problem, ist was the belt that drives the camshaft, is was sprung over some tooth of the wheel because of its bad condition. You have to change this belt every 80tkm and this car has now 100tkm, too much i guess...
The internal wiring of the distributor is in a very good condition,no corrosion of copper or plugs.

Leo
sounds like the dreaded module or the sensor in the distributor remove it & check the plug & socket connections for corrosion also the wires to the sensor the insulation fails & crumbles away leaving the wires bare - usually green & corroded!
The corrosion acts as 'insulation' not very good insulation! gets leaky with changes of temperature or humidity. This causes engine to run OK sometimes but conks out at the least provocation.
sensors are available Betacar or similar can supply. The distributor is the Achilles Heel of the Y10. Panda Fire's use points type distributors makes you wonder why?!!

Hi,
You should have started a new topic instead of adding on to this one.
A1 Auto Salvage in Loanhead, just south of Edinburgh have two Y10s. They will probably send you a hinge. Tel: 0131 440 1777.

Regards, Leo
