Chassis or VIN Number Location

Unread post by William_C »

Hi everyone,

I have gone through all forum posts regarding stamped (not the plate mounted in the engine bay) VIN number locations on the car and know that the windscreen rain channel should show the VIN, with the right hand bonnet channel showing a part number.

The problem I have is that the original VIN at the windscreen rain channel was lost to rust, so I will need to have a new number issued by the licencing department. Unless, I can find another that was stamped somewhere?

Has anyone ever found a stamped number somewhere else, maybe behind the dash?

Thanks
Huib

Sorry my friend. The one in the rain gutter in front of the windshield is the one and only VIN.

Hi everybody, I will try jo join this discussion
About reading a stamped plate on old or rust cars, I remember the last time I went in Paris for the "Retromobile show" (which happens each year in february just after the "salon de l'Agriculture" where you can see the very best animals and agricultural products from France, like thousand of cheeses, wines, and many other things)
So at this Retromobile 2024, I met a guy (probably german origin) who showed a new and special device, able to read any stamped number on metal, even if nothing is visible or sensible to fingers. It uses a special range of "light" or electro-magnetic wave
It could be near the process of "La microscopie électronique à balayage (MEB) ou scanning electron microscope (SEM) en anglais est une technique de microscopie électronique capable de produire des images en haute résolution de la surface d’un échantillon en utilisant le principe des interactions électrons-matière.
As I am not a professionnal, I was not interested, and did not keep in memory the name of this tool.
Hope it can help.
