Car does not start

Unread post by Enzoardovini »

Good morning. I purchased my lancia phedra 2 years ago used. Never had a problem. Now without warning does not start. I see all of the normal lights on the dash but no go a mechanic told me it was the centralina that needed to be reset. It worked for one day and back to not starting. I think I hear a humming when I turn the key but no noice of engine starting. Does anyone have the same problem and how was it resolved.
Thank you

Hi, Phedra is 100% PSA technology, so Citroen/Peugeot specialist may be able to help.

Good morning! It sounds frustrating, especially since your Phedra ran fine for two years and now won’t start. From your description — dash lights working, maybe a humming noise when turning the key, but no engine cranking — it points to something in the starting or immobilizer/electronics system rather than a classic mechanical problem.

A few things to consider:

Starter motor or solenoid – Sometimes the starter will hum but not engage the engine. That humming can be the solenoid trying to work but the motor failing or not getting enough power.

Battery and connections – Even if dash lights are on, a weak battery or corroded terminals can prevent the starter from cranking. Worth double-checking voltage and cleaning connections.

Immobilizer / centralina (ECU) – On Lancias, if the immobilizer or ECU has a glitch, it can prevent starting. A reset might get it going temporarily, which seems to fit your “worked one day” experience. Often this needs a proper scan tool to read faults and sometimes a dealer reprogram is required.

Fuses / relays – Check starter relay and related fuses. A failing relay can hum but not pass full current to the starter.

From what you describe, it seems like the ECU/immobilizer is a likely culprit, but a failing starter or relay can mimic the same symptoms. A diagnostic scan showing fault codes would help pinpoint the issue.

If you want, I can outline a step-by-step way to check whether it’s the starter vs ECU/immobilizer, which is usually how people narrow it down on Phedras. Do you want me to do that?
