Oil temperature gauge S2 Montecarlo

Unread post by MAIS »

How do you install an oil temperature gauge sender in a S2 Montecarlo? Same place as the oil pressure sender?...
Thank you all!

You need the HF oil base, Andrea

Thanks for you reply Andrea. Just to clarify me, do you mean that I need to change the oil filter base (as nr. 13 of the attached picture), because the one from the HF is different from the S2 1.3? So it is not only a question of adding a sensor?
Thanks

The series 1 HF engines also had an oil cooler and consequently an other oil filter base as the hoses to and from the cooler had to be connected to the oil filter base.

The S2 1600 did not have an oil cooler.

See attached pictures. The one on the right is from an S2 1600. The one on the left is from a 1300 engine. Both units have the same 818.100 casting number. The only difference seems to be the machined diameter and thread of the hole which has the sender in one case and a plug in the other case. Maybe not even that. These are from engines I am rebuilding now. I don't really want to take the plug out and check if it fits in the other unit.

Huib is right, you need a different oil filter base, Andrea

Oh that's a pitty... Thanks Andrea and Huib! A great reply, more than well documented. I will anyway check mine base carefully, sometimes it's a surprise what you find out.

Depends in what sense "different" is used. To me it seems that machining the hole with the plug to accept the sensor will do the job. Or find a sensor that fits the existing hole

Is it then the same filter base with a modified hole or is it a different oil filter base? Both statements are true I suppose.

I removed the blanking plug in my 1.3 S2 base, and fitted an appropriate VDO sender after checking the thread size and fitted an auxiliary VDO oil temperate gauge, leaving the clock in place.

The VDO sender is M14 x 1.5 thread - 150c, their part number is (was) 323.805/003/001 if you want to fit that brand.
