Connetcting my electrical adjustable seats how and where?

Unread post by David »

I bought two electrical adjustable seats with seat heating for my 2,0 8v 91 Thema - unfortunately no cable preparation is present. With a car battery I could adjust these provisional into an acceptable seating position. I am grateful for all tips or plans helping me to connect my seats to the electric system of my Thema

Cheers

This is actually a really easy job, but the centre console needs to come out to do the job properly.

From what you've written, I'm assuming that all you need to know is where to pick up a power supply and an earthing point.

For a power supply you have 2 options :
1) I think the best place to pick up the power is from the live wire going to the rear electric window switches. From memory this is a green and yellow wire, but it is easy enough to work this out when you remove the window switches from the centre console.

The advantage of using this power supply is that you are taking the power from a circuit that has a fuse rating which can handle the current for the seats and is also "energised" by a relay. The relay is useful as some electric seats have illuminated switches that will drain the battery if the car is not driven for a few days.

The only down side with using this circuit as the power feed is the possibility, slim I guess, that you may operate the seats and rear windows simultaneously and overload the fuse.

2) Your second option, which is worth considering if the seats have Series 1 switches that are not illuminated, is to take the power from the cigarette lighter. This circuit has a 30A fuse from memory and is thus strong enough to handle the current demand of the seat motors. From memory this is an orange wire.

In both cases you can earth the seats at the earth point which is beside the handbrake lever.

I didn't bother to wire in the heating element of the electric seats as I found it to be of minimal benefit.

I hope this is all clear. Its not really anything more than a 2 hour job if you are doing a thorough job of feeding the wires under the carpet.

Best of Luck
Mike

P.S. if you blow up the seats I've got a spare set in very good condition!

Thanks Mike -

unfortunately I drive the "baby" Thema (2,0 8V "Scuro"). It does not have electrical window lifters for rear doors - only for the front passengers . Your suggestion with the cigarette lighter will probably carry out. Wouldn't it be possible to simply insert a stronger fuse?

Why do you believe that the heating elements of the electric seats are useless? Too little power? I would activate it nevertheless .....just to have it in working condition.

Uhhmm I hope I won´t blow the seats - they´re beautiful black Poltrona Fraus...
You don´t have a a LX/8.32 type steering wheel for sale, don´t you? I would be a lucky buyer because the Scuro is equipped with an ugly sport steering wheel of a German manufacturer (ATIWE) which fits better into a tank than in an italian limousine... ;)

Thanks again

I think the fuse for the cigarette lighter is 30A so its more than capable of handling the seats demand for current. The wire that you want is actually brown and white if my quick check of the wiring diagrams is correct.

If you are using the car on a regular basis then the drain from illuminated seat switches shouldn't be a problem, but you could always fit a simple on/off switch into the power line to prevent the seats draining the battery during extended periods of inactivity!

I've just fitted Black Poltona Frau seats to my 8v Turbo and its well worth the effort for the pleasure of driving in the next best thing to an 8:32.

Sorry, can't help with the 8:32 steering wheel. I've just got a Series 2 plastic one!
