Unreliable timing belt

Unread post by Martin »

Hello!
I haer that the timing belt on the turbo 16V engine is not very safe. Has anyone heard about any fix on this problem, like a stronger belt or other solutions? I have this engine, and worries a lot about this. I have seen all the different tips, and it all ends up in that the belt must be canged with short intervals....

Hi,

I know that there is two types of different camwheels, that the dealer should have replaced within the first year or so.

But yes, the timing belt and balancing belt must be replaced quite often.

Look at scrap yards in germany... You will see alot of cars with broken heads.

Dear Martin
Sorry no tricks! 30.000 km or 3 years max. Saw one (Turbo 1992) with a broken belt after 20.000 km!
Good luck

Hello

I too am a very worried Thema Owner, my car is a 1992 16v Turbo, I had bad experiances before with my standard 16v I.e, I have just bought this car, and the owner said it was changed 2000 miles ago, I will change it anyway, but do not agree with short interval changes. Also, it is a good idea to check the idler bearing as this is sometimes the cause of worn/broken belts.

Hi,
In germany you can not often find this car on scrab yards, because this car is very
rare in Germany. Most people in germany is thinking, lancia is @!#$.
However,the parts are much expensive,particularly 16 V heads,outlettcamshafts
and turbochargers.
And the engine is same as the Integrale 16 V Turbo......
I have tons of parts for Themas, but only in germany/hannover

Helo,
Is the timing belt on a standard thema 2.0 16v (without turbo) just as unreliable as the turbo engine???

Hi,
I have hada belt go/ bent valves were the result and this after changing the belt 16000 miles ago !
now I have new belts and idler bearings but still unhappy. I think there is a sttel reinforced belt used in Evo's and am making enquiries, I did not know about the cam wheel change. It sounds as though there is more information needed.

the original pulleys were only fitted to cars very early on and all should have been changed under warranty. there was a significant belt upgrade in about 93 when the last thema range came out but this can still be unreliable. for some reason Themas appear to suffer more from broken belts than other fiat/lancia that use the same engine I don't know why.
