Hey!
Has anyone a tip about the timing belt on a Thema Turbo 16V serie1 1990. I checked it and found that it had loosende a lot! This is a bit scary, and I heard that I could tighten it a bit. BUT: on the top of the timing belt house, it says that this belt never should be spanned....
What can I do, do I have to change the belt very often, or can I tighten it a little bit every time it has gone slack?
The changing interval in the book says 100 tkm, but I do it at 60 tkm. Has anyone broken their belt after tightening it??

Timing belt
Re: Timing belt
Dear Martin,
You can't tigthen it up because then when the engine is hot you can play gitaar with it. Because of this reason it is very important toocheck it another time when the engine is hot!!!!!!. ==> Don't thigten it up <==
The best time too replace it is a 60.000 km or one a 3 year.
This are my experience.

Re: Timing belt
If the belt is loose, get it CHANGED! I had a belt slip not long after I had got the car, even though it had been changed 20,000 miles earlier, and that cost me £1050 to get fixed after 4 bent valves! If you contact a good Lancia specialist, they sould be able to change it and the balancing shaft belt for around £200. Don't leave it for too long, if it goes at high speed, don't even think about the cost, a new engine at the moment is around £3500!! It's easier to have it change around ever 30,000 miles, even though the service book say alot more!
Re: Timing belt
You tell me!
I lost the belt cruising at 100mph and lost the 16 valves. The whole reparation was US$2.300 (down here in Santiago, CHILE).
The point is that I had it replaced preventively 14 months and 15.000km before !! so I am negotiating with the local Lancia representative and will consider even writing to Lancia in Italy to get some kind of reimburse. I mean, I used an original part at an official service shop. Why should a belt go off after only 15.000km? Either it was not properly installed or the part was defective.
I would appreciate anybody’s comment on this since I am preparing my allegations.

Re: Timing belt
I just saw a Thema turbo 1992 with a broken belt after 20K!
I think one should change the belt and the 3 pistons every 30k or 3 years. Good luck!
