gamma coupe 2000 serie II - power steering pump modification and thermostat mod.

Unread post by Jure Bedenk »

Hello gents :)

I'm looking for a concise blueprint/diagram/pictures/anything at all on how to modify the steering pump on 2.0L S2 coupe. Car has all new belts but I'd like to modify it so the pulley used to drive the power steering is the one for A/C and not the camshaft one, scares me to death each time I turn the car on and waiting for a possible disaster. Not acceptable :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Same goes for thermostat and thermolink. Currently, I've installed a manual switch so the cooling fan can be turned on manually while driving, but that's not... perfect.

Any ideas? I did find the "renault 5 super" solution in this forum and read about a modification using Audi 100 one, but with not enough details (think... Tarzan needs to see pictures to understand ;) )

Best regards & thank you,

Jure

Hello,

Well, I don't think there is a bleuprint available but in short I can tell some and find some pics to send you lateron. We did several mods. First, it is a great help if you have or had an airco in you car. For 3 things; 1 The airco can be removed (Sacrificed)(It hardly ever works and needs expensive refills, exception: when you have a Sankyo pump, then it works well. 2; you have the aircobracket baseplate, this plate is mounted behind the distribution. So if you don't have it, you will have to make one or find one and by mounting change the belts as well. 3; You have the double cranck pulley; you can make a (balanced) pulley yourselves but it helps if it's there. Exception; Felix Furtak of Lancia Parts SA managed to make conversion with airco, generator and steeringpump all together at the front; MOST AMAZING, we don't try this...

This is the only picture I have, maybe Felix has a blueprint of that ?.

Then you need to extend the high pressure hoses to reach the new pump position on the airco bracket; these can be tailor made at an hydraulics company for around 75-120 EUR guess.

The pump must be supported by extra brackets and this needs some workshopping to make the construction stiff and strong. A support for the generator mut be tailor made. I will find some pictures and post the om the GC forum. We used Nissan pumps (Gosh) or Lancia pumps but any brand simular would fit.

Jure,

Just go down the route of least hassle. Slacken off the belts to the Power Steering Pump so they don't exert enough tension on the cam to cause any damage.

Also helps if you avoid sharp turns until the engine has warmed up a bit!

I have a Gamma coupe and did these modifications.
I have used a steering pump from a Thema and did some bracket fixed on top engine bolts.
I keep the original alternator brackets but had to extend the piping .
It works well.
I removed the thermoswith originally installed in the water pump entry.
I installed aon issued from a renault super 5 in the hoose between the radiator in the motor.
I drilled 2 small holes in it for allowing a permanent minimun water flow.

look the correspondence of the forum Italian range of the 13.04.2008, same argument. If you don't speak Italian uses an English Italian translator as I am making now. A cordial salute
