Flavia 1800 cylinder liners
Flavia 1800 cylinder liners
In the manual I can see that when refitting cylinder liners they must protude 0,05 mm over motor block. My question is: does the liners "settle" after some years. In my case the liners are the same level as the motor block. Is that still aceptable/ normal.
Re: Flavia 1800 cylinder liners
Hi, as per workshop manual indication, the 0,05mm protrusion is reached using one or more seal, see item 1 of attached document. This seal, as per Lancia drawings, is a paper seal with 0,05mm thickness.

Re: Flavia 1800 cylinder liners
Hi,
My 1800 is this year dismantled due to head gasket leakage. latest gasket change was made 20 years ago. My question is : Is it OK that liners and motorblock are at the same level, or must I remove the liners and fit new shims. If possible I would avoid that. I have checked the level with a grinded rule and marking ink.

The linear expansion coefficient of Aluminium is twice that of steel. Sounds wise to have the liner a little above the block in cold unmounted situation.

Hi,
you have to remove the liners and add the paper seal.

Re: Flavia 1800 cylinder liners
hi,
Liners at the same level are not acceptable. the liners must be 0,04 - 0,06 mm higher than the engine block in order to have the head gasket do his work. This should normally function with the standard 0,05 mm gaskets. If not, you will have to use thicker gaskets.
Once mounted, have the bare engine block checked with a (water) compression test before mounting, as depending on the condition of the contact surface of the liners, it could well be that the gaskets are not up to their job properly. In that case, (little) use of liquid gasket can be an option (as it was with my engine).

Re: Flavia 1800 cylinder liners
In my engine, the liners were about 0.05mm below the deck line without gaskets. With the gaskets that came with the gasket set I bought, they were about 0.25mm above the deck line. Obviously these gaskets are thicker (and probably softer material) than originals were.
Just be very careful with removal of old gaskets. In my case they were extremely tightly sticked on the block surface, and none of the chemicals I tried had any effect on them. They were difficult to spot on, until I realized that turning the liners in their places for couple of rounds "marked" the higher spots on sealing surface, and that way I was able to remove everything and have all the liners sitting straight and on same level. To get a well sealed result all the gasket residues need to be removed, just be very careful to not to scratch the surfaces!

Re: Flavia 1800 cylinder liners
Thanks, all of you, I have now decided to rebuild the liners to the protude 0,06 mm. Just one question moore. My cylinderheads were machined 20 years ago. I can now see the the V-slot in the head has been milled off. Does anyone know the shape of this slot. Is it the same shape as the slot on the top of the liners.
Does anyone have experiance of head without the V-slot.

Re: Flavia 1800 cylinder liners
Hi, if you are interested, I've just rebuilt liners using original documentation for dimensions and tolerancies.
Regarding V slot on the head, the only problem that I see is that this means that you need an oversized (thicker) head gasket because on your head a lot of material was removed.
Kind regards
