My car jecks when engine is warm (full normal temperature)

Unread post by ese »

I do not know if anyone can be of help to me. I do have a kind of problem with my lancia dedra 1.6ie 1990 model. When the engine is warm or hot (normal) the car starts to "jeck" and not getting full power. Do you have any suggestions on what could be wrong? The car runs very fine when not hot. This is a new problem I just noticed after I just changed the water pump. thermo switch and thermostart. The air filter seems clean and the plugs very ok, the distributor cap and distributor looks clean too.... What could the problem be? Please help me if you know something.
Thank you
Ese

Check the Electronic Brain of the car. Some years ago when my dedra went hot it just stoped working. At that time i changed the electronic brain and it was ok. Maybe it a circuit fealure because of the heat.

Dear antonio,
Thank you very much for your advice. I shall check and change the Brain as appropriate. Thank you.

Hi,

There are two temperature sensors:

1 for the dashboard gauge
1 used by the engine management system (brain)

I had the engine management temp sensor fail. This caused very jerky driving and acceleration.

The sensor works by electrical resistance. The brain uses this resistance to set the fuel / mixture level. When the engine is cold the resistance is low and reduces as the engine warms up. My sensor kept breaking down and giving infinite (open circuit) resistance. This made the brain think the engine was very warm (when it was not) and weaken the fuel mixture causing the very jerky response especially when accelerating.

You can measure the sensor resistance with a multi-meter and check against the technical specification. If the fault is intermitent though it might be best to just replace the sensor. The sensor has a multi-plug type fitting and is located on the right hand end of the cylinder head (in the thermostat) not in the middle of the cylinder head (this is the dashboard temp sensor).

Cheers

Just a correction to my earlier posting.

When the engine is cold the temp sensor resistance used by the engine management system is low and INCREASES as the engine gets hotter.

@Julian
Hi,
I have a simular problem. When the engine is cold the it runs very badly. I have to step on the gas otherwise it would turn off again. After about a 10 minute drive, when the engine is warm, it runs just fine.

So the explanation you are giving sounds good to me and I tryed to figure out the sensors resistance.
I was not able to find it though. There are two right in the middle of the engine. The one has one wire connected, the other one two. And there is one in the cooler unit which probaly turns the fan on and off.
I can not see anything on the right hand side of the engine though. Could it be possible that I have a different engine? It is a 1.6 ie made in 1992 ...

I would be very thankful for a hint from you.
