Buying one

Unread post by M. Daniels »

Hi There,
in a few weeks I'm about to go shopping for a '92-'92 Dedra 1.8i LE. Does anyone have goods tips for what I have to check for. What are the real weak points? Can I buy a dedra with 200.000 kilometres on the clock or is this a problem (alway maintained at a dealer)? Any other suggestions? please help me, I realy like the car but I'm not that technical,

Hi Martijn

No real major problems, most important is to check that the belts have been changed to schedule or preferably sooner, if you are not sure if they have been, then change at once without delay as a belt going is real bad news. 200,000Km shouldn't be a problem if it has been serviced correctly,it is also worth checking/changing the idler bearings at the same time as if 1 of these seize it may break or throw off a belt. I am on my third 2.0ie and the first two covered best part of 150,000 Miles each with 1 head gasket & 1 radiator & 1 rear caliper being the only items changed out of the ordinary between them apart from the usual things that wear out ie brake discs pads etc.

Check to make sure all electrics work, the rear door central locking & courtesy light switches are built into the door locks themselves and are expensive to change.
make sure the handbrake built into the rear calipers work correctly as they have a tendency to seize.

Check the cloth upholstery as it doesn't wear as well as the Alcantara.

It is worth checking that you have a seal on the top of the fuel filler neck, this should be white for non cat cars and green for cat cars, if this is missing you will get petrol smells inside the car.

My first Dedra a 1990 had a hole appear at the rear of the back wheelarch where all the mud and grit was thrown up so it is worth checking although I haven't seen this on any other Dedra.

Hope this helps if you need any futher advise please contact me

I would add the following ........front suspension arms can wear (both bushes and the ball joint) not too expensive to replace but avoid pattern replacements as many appear to be sub-standard..... . Radiators can be prone to corrosion and often don't last too long .........Rust on the rear arches is fairly typical but accelerated by even minor bumps or scrapes (seems to affect the internal corrosion resistance) .......rear calipers can be problematic but this is a bigger problem on cars with ABS as the calipers are much much much more expensive...... test drive the car with the sunroof open at speed and/or a window slightly down as they are prone to sucking in exhaust fumes under these conditions seems to affect some but not all cars!........many cars are now severely neglected due to the low purchase prices watch out for running problems in the injection system not always so easy to fix if you don't know the right people
