Tapping Noise every 3-4 secs front of Engine Lancia Delta 2 HPE 1.6 16V

Hi

I have a tapping noise that comes about every 3 secs from the front of the engine somewhere. Do you if the Lancia Delta 2 1.6 16v has a variator as I have heard these go on the Fiat Bravo 1.6 16v engine which I believe is the same. Or does anyone else know what else it might be , I don't believe it is tappets as it is not on a regular basis.
