I think, distributor isn' t guilty, if You say that all electrical devices are ok. By my opinion, when You drive in city and engine is hot, in fuel pump formatives fuel vapour lock and fuel don' t flow to carburetor. When You drive in country roads, pump had cooled by air. Try to change fuel pump. I have one analogous situation, and guilty was fuel pump inlet valve who was not fully hermetic.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your message - it was the distributor. The car had a Ducllier distributor but we found one in a breakers yard with a Magneti Marelli one and that works great.
