Unreliable timing belt

BEWARE

This problem does not only apply to 16v Turbo, I had a series 3 16v VS Auto and although this was fitted from new with the modified gear wheels & the belt was correctly replaced with the latest item, I broke a belt at 50mph bending 8 valves at at 18,000 miles ,well below 30,000 KM .
The only good thing was that the Fiat dealer I use managed to get me 80% back under warranty which I understand is a unusual event.

I don't think there is much that you can do other than check frequently, it isn't much of a job to just unbolt the top piece of the belt cover and have a look, bit of a pain but at least it is cheap & quick to do.

Ok, so Lancia never had any fix due to this problem. I find that a bit strange, a lot of people will for this reason steer away from these cars, and that is no good for Lancia. Would be interesting to confront Lancia Italy with the problem, they should have understood that when they add 8 valves the timing belt has a lot more job to do....!!!!

A little disappointed...!!

What is the best way to change the timing belt on Thema? Do I have to lift out the engine or can it easily be replaced with the engine still in the motor cabinet?

Hi Stefan!
It`s very easy, when you look on the right through the wheelhouse. In the first remove the cover on it.
