Beta coupe`s Power steering

Unread post by Tatsya Takawaki »

Hello, I write from Japan.

My Beta coupe`s Power steering rack is leaking fluid.

I`m going to have replaced the seals of rack.

But, I don`t have the seals.

I looked for the seals everywhere in my country,
but I couldn`t find it .

Please advice me , How to buy the seals.

Teach me the shop who sell me the seals!

Hi.Hamish

Thank you for your reply to my massage.

I try to search in international-auto.com.

But, in a probability, I must buy the rack assembly ! Ha.........

i once heard that the beta power steering rack seals are the same as the ones used in a particular audi, though i can't remember which year or model audi. i'll see if i have the information somewhere and if i can find i will send another message.

i found what i was looking for in relation to your leaking power steering rack. this is from an email message i received as member of the lanciabeta email list on yahoogroups. i simply cut and paste this information into this viva-lancia forum and it is as written. please understand that i have never rebuilt a steering rack. i would think that hamish knows more about this subject than i. good luck with this. hopefully, audi sells parts in japan.

"As a Lancia power steering rack home rebuilder three times in the
past 10 years, I can tell you that the leaking rack problem is not a
complex one. The boots have nothing to do with the actual leak, it
is
one small housing seal on the pasenger side of the rack housing that
gets baked by the exhaust manifold. The 1980-82 Audi 5000 ZF kit has
the seal needed. My rack has 185,000 miles on it, and this is the
only part that has needed replacement. The seal is located where the
steering rack enters the preasure side of the housing (the passengewr
side), and is a little tricky to extract and install. The way to
stop
the leak from happening again is to build a heat sheild to protect
the
rack. Thats what I did 45,000 miles ago, and it hasn't leaked a drop
and the boots are not split. Honestly, just that one seal."

IIRC, the Audi 5000 name was only used in the USA. In the rest of the world, the same car was sold as the Audi 100 or 200 (depending on engine and trim level -- I think the 200 was only the turbo version?). So look for a ZF power steering rack seal kit for a 1980-82 Audi 100 or 200.

I suffered from this chronic problem as well. For a while Chris Oberg at Fiat Plus had access to the kits, I got one from him and had it installed by a hydraulic shop. 5 years later the leaking returned. This time my new mechanic cleaned up the outside of the unit (while still in the car) and then added a ultraviolet light sensitive additive to the fluid, ran the car and looked for the source of the new leaks using a black light. It turned out to be an "O" ring around a plug, he replaced it with a high performance urethane gasget washer; leaking has stopped. I highly recommend the ultraviolet tracer system as it shows the source of the problem.
