Hi,
even on a long run the oil temperature gauge on my 84 hpe vx doesnt make it above the border between the yellow and the green. Is this likely to be a gauge / sender problem or have people had experience of it being something more. The car currently has 15/40 semi-synthetic oil in it.

Hi Chris:
Check out the discussion on this same subject in "older messages" from mid-December of 2002. The most likely culprit is your sender unit.

Re: Low reading oil temperature
I had a look through the archives and the only thing i can find relates to the oil pressure sender. My problem is with the temperature gauge. Does remind me that I need to fit a baffled sump though. On another oil related topic im getting an oil smell on harsh cornering. Thats a mystery to me.
How I wish that my new steering rack gaiters would arrive so I can get the car motd and back in use!

Re: Low reading oil temperature
Sorry, Chris, my blindness. I failed to note that you are asking about the temp.
Re: Low reading oil temperature
Chris,
I wouldn't worry too much, I've only seen the oil temperature get really high on my VX coupe (or in the past in my old VX HPE ) when sitting in traffic after an 'animated' country run... and most commonly it sits just in the green. You could try changing the thermostat on the filter housing, but I'm inclined to say if it works don't knock it!
By the way, if you're going the baffled sump route (I've fitted a GC item to my engine) be careful to leave enough room/engineer the space into the top baffle plate to allow the oil dipstick to fit, most drawings/templates are for standard engines and as you know the VX dipstick enters in a different place over that of a standard Beta

Re: Low reading oil temperature
On the VX there is radiator for oil, and between the filter and the engine bloc there is a part (only on VX) and in this part there is a thermostat which allow oil to go or not in the radiator circuit.
Perhaps on your car because of a worn thermostat in this part the oil circuit of the radiator is all the time open (like it could be with a worn calorstat for the water circuit ).
Close the oil radiator circuit and try to drive to see if the oil temperature start to be normal again.
If yes you incriminate this part.

Thanks, i wasnt aware that there was a thermo in the oil cooler circuit (even though it makes perfect sense!). Ill check it out. thanks
