I was speaking with a guy at Omicron and he was the one who suggested fitting "Rally" cams and a decent exhaust as one way to improve power.

I'll certainly book the car in for a timing check and possibly a rolling road tune up.

Thanks,
Dario

That sort of corrosion is usually called dialectric or anodic. But I don't think that's what your photo shows. The aluminum appear to have failed through embrittlement, and that's either by fatigue or welding heat.At least that's what it looks like to me; I could be way off.

The easiest door closure adjustment is at the strike, which is held by countersunk Philips-head screws. It adjusts in both axes. so you should be able to correct it there. The hinges can be shimmed, too, but that's not usually necessary unless you're remounting the entire door.

Ed, thanks for the door tips, I'll have a go at sorting it.

Johnny replies: Ed, have I ever driven a 1.6? No, of course not ! Who would trust me ? I wouldn't even trust me !
My comment was a crude, unjustified barb at my (lucky)Fulvia 1.6 friends, some of whom have sometimes told me that a 1.6 is a bit fussier........but they were smiling !

Actually, 1 Fulvisti told me (& many others) (many times) (yes, it is he who co-organizes a 1x per yr event & then dares to outdrive everyone driving 1.3 or 1.6 to provehis claim)......... "after the 1.2 it was all downhill !"

As I said, the 1.6 is not nearly as smooth as a 1.2 or 1.3--few engines are. But if some owners think they're fussier, I can only think it must be the stock Solex carbs or ignition. Because mine has Webers, Pertronix ignition, and decent plugs, and you turn the key, push in to start, and it starts--no fuss. And before I took it off the road for some overdue work, I was doing 5000 miles a year. In any case, it's not really a matter of one or the other being better; the 1.3 and 1.6 simply have very different characters and--at least for me--findamentally change the character of the car.

Tim, please relax; that's far too many exclamation points. Frankly, I was grasping at straws. Johnny said he knew of 1600 owners who said the 1600 engine was fussier. That certainly hasn't been my experience. But rather than simply deem it nonsense--which it very probably was--I tried to think what might be different on my engine that might make my own experience different from someone with a stock engine. I do know the Pertronix and Iridium plugs make the engine less prone to fouling. But other than those, the only difference from stock is that I don't currently run the Solex 42 DDHF. As I say, I suspect that the reports of fussiness are greatly exaggerated, if not entirely apocryphal.

In any case I have nothing against originality, nor against the Solex per se. As I've said before, I'm planning on trying the original Solex on the oddball 1600 I'm building now, even though the 45 DDHFs have a reputation for more difficult tuning than the 42s.

Hi Ed

Was only pulling your leg!!!!!!

Re fouling I found from bitter experience that any Champion Plugs foul on both my 1600's but stanard NGK's work fine???!!! I too have electronic (Luminition) ignition on both cars.

Johnny has witnessed my 1600 sport on three trips we have made jointly in/around the Ardennes (courtesy of Huib) and was even trying to out gun me on one Ardenne road in his Gamma coupe. He knows my 1600 isnt fussy except when it broke down with an unresloved mysterious fault that disappeared and touch wood has not reappeared since (3 years ago) - but that could have happened to any car (it had points ignition fitted at that time).

Happy fettling

hi T LuLu
I think ur 1.6 became fussy rite on time in the rite place since it seemed many a person who parked when & where u did "rapidly took 2 the bush" after lots of 'Royale-Garden Hotel Morning Coffee; the bush being right adjacent 2 the roadside Fulvia Car Park.

Then....lo & behold, when ur 1.6 decided to unrid itself ofits 'fitoffusiness' (if I recall with nothin actually being done 2 it) every 'bushman' (& woman) was ready 2 continue playin "chase a Fulvia leading to ?
The J&J Team certainly were; after lightening our load !

On day 1 we didn't even look at a route map...we just drove as fast as we could to not lose the lead Fulvy (in spite of blue exhaust clouds). On day 2 we did look at a map for 1 minute......, just to say "we navigated our way quite well" !

Then we put the map away, 2 start having fun cajasing other Fulvy; trying 1 not fall of the road in those 359° turns chasing whomever was leading. I remember well the 180° bend, uphill right, followed by hard left........the bend where 1 "local-car" ... coming down the hill from a direction we were not driving on" decided to park in a stream-bed. No one hurt ! Phew !

It was at this corner that the younger J screamed "how did you do that?" after I gracefully negotiated the bends, finally in the right gears, at right revs, with just right amount of slide . I think I screamed OOOOOOOOHHHHHAAA!!!!!!!!!!!

My comment the day previous was "I can't do anythin right; I've 4gotten how 2 drive; I'm muckin-up every shift...up or down... I'm braking far 2 early; I've 4gotten how to corner. J said "oh, I think you're doing fine" (nice kid !)

Wat had actually occured is that I'd not driven my FSZ (or any other car) with verve 4 so long that I was really out of Zink ! On day 2 I became "a reborn driver"; alot happier, alot smoother. Since then, fueled by threats of harm by Claire, I've been drivin my FSZ more often & smilin a alot more !

See you soon !; perhaps with new seats by then !
