I need to replace one of the hard brake lines going to the Girling front calipers on my Fulvia. It's not corroded, or anything, just the wrong length, so the flex hose union doesn't sit in its retaining bracket. This means that the line flexes slightly at extremes of steering lock. Also, it annoys me not having such a simple thing done right!
Anyway, I've found a place that will make up custom lines, but I need to specify the type of flare and the nuts. I believe it's a DIN bubble flare and 10x1.25mm, correct?
Yes, I know in principle that I can make my own, but I have to say that, after trying several flaring tools over the years, I've never had 100% success.
Thanks as always,
Peter
Brake line specifications
Re: Brake line specifications
The thread is indeed M10x1.25. Overall length 19.5mm. Standard FIAT pipe screws. The tip of the 19mm ones is without thread
On some modern replacement flex hoses it might be better to use the shorter version of about 14mm with thread all the way to the tip. Look into the hole. If you are looking onto the top of the cone you need the 14mm ones. If you look at the bottom of the cone, you need the 19mm ones.
Note that there should be an adapter on the wheel brake cilinder. On the front this is originally a banjo. The thread of the connection on the cilinder itself is 3/8" UNF

Re: Brake line specifications
Thanks Huib.
But I'm puzzled about your mention of a banjo fitting. What I see on my car are two short hardline sections that go from the upper and lower cylinders on the caliper. Each of these hardlines connects to a flexible hose. The ends of the flexible hoses are clamped to a bracket that is in turn screwed to the top of the caliper.
The hardlines go straight into the caliper, no banjo adapters. Maybe this is wrong?
I had assumed that the threads in the caliper body were M10x1.25. Sounds like I'd better take a look ... I haven't actually disconnected the hardlines from the caliper yet. I hope some previous 'grease monkey' hasn't forced M10x1.25 mm screws into a 3/8" UNF threads!

Re: Brake line specifications
Sorry Peter. For some obscure reason I pictured the series 1 Dunlop brakes in my mind.
On the series 2 Girling brakes the thread is M10x1.25
On the series 2 Girling brakes the thread is M10x1.25
Re: Brake line specifications
No problem Huib. In fact, since my Fulvia is a mixture of all 3 series, even I get mixed up as to what's what, and where! But the front brakes are indeedGirling, and the rears Dunlop.
I did disconnect the hardline and was relieved to see the M10x1.25 thread. (I was also relieved that all the line nuts and bleed screws came undone without any problem. California is kind to cars ...)
