Hi ed,
nothing about this in the instructions but what i will check first is if the MSD and timing computer work by replacing the pertronix equiped distrubutor with the original one. I will let you know.

Hi William,
I think that's an excellent idea; you ought to make sure the MSD works, and it's always possible that the MSD has compatibility issues with the Pertronix.

In the MSD instructions a diagram is included for how to connect the pertronix to the MSD. So the config is tried and tested I suppose.
I have installed the original distributor and still the same problems. the timing is spot on but there seem to be only half the sparks (like it thinks it is an 8 stroke)

William,

Maybe i'm just saying somethin stupid now, but hey, maybe it helps.
What you could try is taking a spare set of spark plugs. The moment the points open when using conventional ignition, is also the point where a spark starts. With other words, the points op if you see a spark on the testing spark plug.

I suppose that when you use the pertronix ignition the moment you see a spark, is in theory the same moment the, no longer placed, points would open.
Than you only have to find out which cylinder should be firing. That is the one with compression. What I used to do is put a hose in each cylinder hole, seal the hole with ducktape, and blow through it. Than you would be able to find the cylinder that hase compression.

I have once timed my Fulvia without a timing light this way, and it worked out fine. Only the light does not stay on, so you have to really watch the spark, or you will miss it.

God luck with it!
Regards,
David

Thankx everybody for their advise. It helped me in confirming that i was on the right track. I have found the correct cilinder with compressed air. Then I have used a spare plug to find the correct moment of firing. (both with pertronix as with a normal distributor). But without succes. It seems the spark is only sparking every other time. About once every second while cranking the engine with the startermotor. I have now turned myself to the MSD helpdesk and given them the installation diagram I used and even a short film of the sparkplug while cranking. I'm awaiting their advise.
The istallation I was hoping to use is a Pertronix points replacement, a MSD6 multi spark ignition combined with a 8191 timing computer with which you can program the ignition curve to your liking. My engine is somewhat modified and therefore I would like to experiment with different advance curves to find out which one suits the engine best. I allready had these parts at home before Huib introduced its 123 ignition otherwise i might not had bothered with this system at all...

I cracked the problem!!
it turned out to be a faulty coil which was surprising as I have used the same coil without fail untill I carried out the MSD conversion.
I still have to experiment with the right curve but without a roling road that will be a matter of trial and error or has anybody found a good advance curve for a souped up small capacity Fulvia?
