Clutch issues

Unread post by ekranoplan »

After changing gearbox last winter, had strange fluff coming out of gearbox bell housing and then slippage. Results here:

http://web.me.com/ekranoplan/LUKAFOTORA ... age21.html

The entire friction plate (one side only) disintegrated.

Noticed the thrust bearing had two "spot" welds holding casing to base plate but both had broken.

Changed bearing from 1970s gearbox and installed new Uno Turbo Mk2 housing and racing 3 paddle plate.

Seemed fine but now new clutch is slipping under load (5th gear, at around 100 -120 km/h).

Cable also was renewed and is not overly tight.

So - any thoughts on thrust bearing - would a Fulvia one be very differnt to an Uno Trubo example?

I have never seen an Uno Turbo thrust bearing. I always assumed (rightly or wrongly) that the interface to the gearbox and the operating fork is car specific.

Earlier S2 thrust bearings consisted of a carrier which interfaced with the gearbox and the fork. A seperate thrust bearing was pressed onto it to interface with the pressure plate. Later S2 thrust bearings are one unit. Their quality might be questionable if not original.

However if the clutch slips with the clutch released, type and quality of the thrust bearing is not important as it is not doing anything.

How may cm's of free play do you have at the top of the clutch arm (under the carbs)?

Is the spring that pulls that arm back correctly mounted?
The arm is mounted on a spindle that runs through the clutch housing. On the same spindle a small bracket is mounted for the spring. That bracket should point down ward. On some cars that bracket is mounted up ward. In this case the spring pulls the arm the wrong way. Or sometimes the spring is gone.

How is the pressure table? This is the round ring with ID and OD of the clutch disc and mounted in the flywheel. It should protrude 0,5 mm from the flywheel. If anything less than 0,5mm you loose friction force rapidly. Also its surface should be good.

Can you post a pic of the clutch side of the flywheel?

Thanks Huib,

Will measure tomorrow.

In the meantime here are more pics of the problem:

OK, The retrun spring linkage on the clutch splindle is downward but around 45 degrees towards rear of car.

The play at the top of the lever was 1cm, I have loosened it off fully and get 2cm. Just taken for a test drive and clutch bite is much lower on pedal but seems not to slip.

Have removed starter motor to see if any debris has formed from new clutch plate.

Best Regards

The 45 degree is ok. Just as long as the lever is pulled back.

Judging from the pics I would say the surface of the pressure table inside the flywheel does not look fresh. I would replace it. The old one can be pressed out. Any machine shop can turn a new one and heat shrink it in.

Thanks Huib

So 20mm play OK on cable?

Thanks also for info on main bearing torques today - all back together now and hope ok for Sat race. Best Rgds

Lucas

Half an inch is spec (12.5cm). I am a great fan of uno turbo clutches as I have fitted 2 to my 1.6's with so far no prbs. I use the fulvia thrust bearing though. I find I need c 1cm only free play.
