New door handles and dashboard

Unread post by kebin »

I am making 20 door handles and ten dashboards the dashboards are for S3.

Dashboards, These are made of fibre board and the finish is a painted burr walnut, The paint effect is a rap round finish, as my original dash had plywood edges showing,( which iratated me ) and they are sealed with 2 coats of 2pack PU on the back and the front is burnished to a polished finish. The reason for using fibre next to plywood is that it is more stable and constant in manufacture and will not delaminate and a much cleaner machined edge giving a better finish all round.

Handles, These are also made for fibre board and hand carved and painted with a burr walnut finish and burnished This first batch of 20 are to the dimentions of the original and the future ones will be slightly larger to give a more curvy ergonomic feel ( which has a much softer feel ) I have carved a small hollow in the backs to stop the handle rocking on the captive nut

The first batch will be sold at a discounted price up until 1 Sept. as from then I will be self employed and it is very expensive in Spain

I have read about Mr Fiat and I will give your money back if for any reason you do not like them

HI there, I have a template and jigs for a right hand dash. but if a left hand dash is a mirror image I can make them with reversing the template. Do you know if it is a mirror image?

I do not know what a LHD dash looks like, but if it can be reversed, i.e a mirror image, then I can do it with the template for the S3, as for the S1 there is a small difference on the bottom edge , below the clocks and I would need a strong paper template of this section including the clocks, as this would be the register points for the new template

It's not quite a mirror image; the swept cutout for the ignition on the steering column remains on the right side of the steering column whether RHD or LHD.

Ed thanks for that info,
I can use my master template to machine a new LHD template.
Thanks Ed

Can you make a new S2 dashboard (same as S3) in LHD with the original type of semi-matt, straight-grain wood veneer so it looks exactly the same as the original dashboard? If so, I'd be very interested.

Thanks, John

Hi John,
The answer is yes I can, if it is a mirror image of a S3, and I have just found some sepele veneer in the store room.
I will check the original colour on google images, as it may need a light stain to match the original colour
