Hello everyone,
I need some advice on aligning the gearbox/engine on the subframe.
I have tried checking from either side of the subframe to the center line of the gearbox but found it very difficult as there is little room to fit a ruler/measuring tape for an accurate measurement.
Any help will be much appreciated!

Re: Engine/Gearbox to Subframe alignment
When I was assembling my subframe,
the allignment was one of the easy parts... :S
The seam underneath the gearbox is perfect position to start from.
There are on a housing halve, 2 cams cast, they can help you with the allignment. (see pic)
The other point of measurement is the inner side of your subframe.
If you can allign the gearbox perfectly, the engine will folow.
According to the repair manual, diffirence (L/R) should be less than 1mm.

Re: Engine/Gearbox to Subframe alignment
Thanks Bart, the real issue that I'm having is measuing from the seam to the edge of the subframe acurately while being underneath the car since the subframe is still in place, I thought there might be a trick to it but I guess I just move a bit measure a bit etc etc.... somewhat tricky though...
Re: Engine/Gearbox to Subframe alignment
Note that if the mounting rubbers of engine and gearbox are too old, it is an up hill battle. If they are new, everything falls into place almost by itself.
Re: Engine/Gearbox mountings
Hi Huib, regarding engine mountings, this is a point of concern for me... I have some level of clutch judder, when I got the car the front top engine mountings were practically melted away due to an oil leak, I replaced them with some old ones but of course in realtively good nick now a fair bit of the judder has gone but there is still some there and if I accelerate a bit it helps to a point...
Do you think that is engine mount related?
Could the rear lower gearbox mounting cause something like that?
I guess that could also account for the slightly out of alignment subframe/engine...
PS. I have checked the clutch plate and flywheel and they seem to be in good condition the only issue is a bit of release bearing noise...

Change all the mountings after 36 years or so!

I can't really says which combinations of bad / old rubbers give what effects.
