Grinding and Clunking Noises

Unread post by lanciagarage »

My S2 Fulvia has a grinding sound coming ( I think) from the area around the steering box. Always difficult to trace a noise when you are sitting in the car.

It only happens when the car is facing downhill and and I'm doing parking maneuvers (spelling :S) actually returning the steering to the right after it has been full lock to the left. The steeering box has fluid and I can't seem to see anything catching underneath.

The Clunking or gentle knocking sound comes from the right front wheel. It only developes once the car has travelled more than 20km and if I touch the brakes lightly, the sound goes away. I have checked calipers, tie rod ends, and CV's. Could this be a wheel bearing?

Grinding: Isn't the subframe rubbing the body?

Clunking: Sounds like wheel bearing. Can't you feel any play with one hand on 12 o'clock and one hand on 6 o'clock? With lots of luck tightening the axle nut may solve the problem.

Phil

Grinding: downhill + parkingmanouvres: wheel touching wheelarche or a defaulty homokinetic driveshaft perhaps?
Clunking: thinking again on a defaulty driveshaft or wheelbearing.

General test for defaulty driveshaft: on a flat parkinglot turning wheels till steeringlock and driving circles in two directions. Increase power slightly. If you hear the clunking and grinding again: the outher front wheel homokinetic driveshaft (wheel side) is suspicious.

Is it possible the gaither was changed some time ago? Now the gaither is ok, but maybe sone dirt/sand is hidden in the grease ...

good luck sherlock!

have you checked the two little bolts that hold the inner flange for the drive shaft to the gearbox they sometimes shear if they've come loose allowing the drive shaft to slide excessively
