Grigio Inglewood

Unread post by Michael Findlay »

I am thinking about painting my Flavia this colour as I assume it to be the medium to dark gray metallic that looks very good on the Pininfarina coupes. I have looked at various Lancia model years that the colour was offered but am still not sure if it is the colour I am thinking of. I do not have a paint chip and the colour code had produced much head scratching down at the local paint shop where they tried to tell me it was red or cream. Italian paint maker Lechler has a current code and I can get a small quantity mixed for a reasonable price but does anyone know what Grigio Inglewood actually looks like?

In expectation of having my beliefs confirmed,

I attach a photo of the Alperton (UK importers) colour chart from around 1966. It has a sample of Grigio Inglewood on it. According to this it was only offered on the Flavia Zagato (second colour from the top), but several other greys were offered on the coupes. I have a much higher definition PDF of this that I will gladly send you, but it is too big to put on this site. If you PM me your e-mail address I will pass it on to you.

Thanks to Neil Cundy I now know that Grigio Inglewood is closer to silver than gray and was used on the Flavia Sport only. The shade I was hoping for turned out to be Grigio Flemington which was a saloon colour. Lechler in New Zealand provide a great service and I assume would do so elsewhere. They we able to find a code and mix me a small batch of Grigio Flemington in a low VOC waterborne formulation able to be sprayed by rank amateurs. You can check out various arcane Lnacia colours on their main site. All looking good so far then.

Oh? Lechler in New Zealand will mix up samples? that is very interesting news, as Lechler is pretty much unavailable here in the US - there is one dealer in Canada, none too helpful.

Might the NZ Lechler be willing to mix up some samples of some other colors? - there are some Aurelia ones that would be very very good to have.

Lechler in about 1990 published new paint code numbers for old paints - and it would be nice to reassemble a "paint chip" book from that.

Grigio Flemington

I received my test batch of paint today and tried some on the car. Without having anything else much to refer to, Lechler's Grigio Flemington looks very good. It is a charcoal grey that I recognise from pictures of Flavia saloons. It looks quite handsome on the coupe. Smits Group had no problem interpreting the order and I am very happy with the service. Anyone else interested in following this up as a source of older Lancia colours could contact Smits Group in Auckland NZ. Their web address is http://www.smitsgroup.co.nz. I dealt with Shanon Newman.

Michael

Only just seen this thread!

I went through all this some 15 months ago and chose Grigio Inglewood having sourced the max meyer code and had a sample made up. I had bought a 1600 Fulvia sport with this "odd" metalic grey which was quite dark and had a bit of a gunmetal depth to it and looked really good on the Zagato body. Anyway having seen the colour on a Zagato Flavia at the centenary Covent Garden bash I had a sample of Grigio Inglewood made up by my Max meyer supplier in uk. I am very happy with my decision especially when the sun comes out and picks up the subtle bronze in the paint!

Thanks for the advice on the paint. I have not yet purchased the full quantity as I will not paint until the weather warms up a bit. I thought the colour looked quite rich and the sample I sprayed was certainly dark. I think it will be quite handsome. Do you have any images of your car?

Regards,

Michael
