yes it all sounds way too scary to me
so....... maybe i should try swapping the wheel assembly first and see if thats ok, then do all that other stuff if it fails?
any estimates on average time just to do that job?

Iain

Because the bearings are over engineered and the centers are split you could (as budgets are tight) try to force some fresh grease in through the crack to relubricate them (having carefully cleaned out any crap that you might in advertently force in. I tried manfully to remove a bearing retaining nut (even hired the right tool from omicron) but I guess I did not have a big enough vice (I did have a 5 foot lever though). Anyway I took the hub and tool back to omicron and they swapped the bearings while I waited BUT they had to really heat up the bearing carrier to get it free - something I couldnt have done. While its all apart you could look at the CV outer boots as well and get them changed and regreased as the often fail on MOT with a split or two.

If you have all the tools I guess it would take about 2 hrs

To this I would add that after the grease has given up, the balls rust - then even though there is no play, you must replace the bearing - I have this on my own car at present.
