Rear bumper mounting

I'd like to mount a rear bumper on my Fulvia, but I'm not clear on how the various brackets are arranged.

Inside the bumper there are 4 U-shaped brackets, a pair on one side and a matching pair on the other. Each of these has a threaded boss, apparently M10x1.5; see picture. (Yes there is some rust!)

There are 2 mounting points on the car, each threaded M10x1.25. They line up roughly halfway between each of the pairs of bumper brackets.

Am I right in thinking that there are supposed to be additional brackets that span each pair of bumper mountings, and bolt to studs that screw into the car mountings?

Or maybe I have an S2 bumper and an S1 car?

A "D" shaped bracket needs to be made up for each side with a central slot for the mounting bolt (1 per side). If your car is s2 then the bumper has rubber strip running along its equator and two carello number plate lights. Best to fit the right bumper.

For the brackets they are not symetrical if I remember so crawl under someones car to get measurements.

Peter, after viewing your message, I went out into the garage to look at my S1 bumpers, which are currently hanging in the rafters.

Without borrowing my neighbor's ladder, I only have good line of sight on the front bumper. For what it's worth, here's a snapshot of the bracket on that. I'll try to get the rear one later today.

And how is it that Lancia made the bumper out of stainless and then used non-stainless material for the bracketry?

After looking at Shaun's photo, a bell went off in the dark recesses of what was once my brain. I went into the garage and looked inside the box labeled 'bumper hardware', and there are the brackets! I must have removed them when the bumpers came in, and then forgotten they were there.

Actually the rear ones are slightly different from the fronts shown on Shaun's picture, but basically the same idea.

From Tim's description, I have S2 bumpers; there is a ribbed rubbber strip and also the two Carello lights. My Fulvia started out as an S1 but has various bits from later series replaced over the years, most notably the entire front subframe, engine and transmission. It looks as if the rear bumper will fit, though, once I have it cleaned up.

I also have a front bumper, but don't plan to mount that. I've got used to the bumperless look at the front, and in any case the front bumper is somewhat mangled and would require quite a bit of work to make it look nice.

My S2 HF is bumperless and looks the part as it is lowered and has gp3 arch extensions. My S1.5 (esentially S2 with S1 front suspension) has bumpers and guess what, it looks the part!!!

Well, I got the bumper on. Not without some problems; one of the threaded mounting holes on the car was stripped, so I had to install a helicoil.

The clearances between the front tips of the bumper and the car body seem rather tight. There's about 3 mm gap. Is that how it's supposed to be ... not that I can do much about it if it isn't!

Maybe there should be a rubber spacer of some sort at those points?

Peter, my recollection is that the rear bumper fits closely to the bodywork, and that, absent bumper over riders, was more cosmetic than protective on the Fulvia.

I also looked through the bag of take-off bits, currently attached to one of the bumpers hanging in the rafters, and didn't see anything that looked like spacers.

This all relates to my Series 1; the situation on your later car may be different.
