What is the best way to remove old thermostat without destroying the housing thread? It seems to be 41mm Socket size?
Will old Renault Thermostat fit in the housing or is the hose a better option?
Cheers
Thermostat Removal
Re: Thermostat Removal
Right. 41 mm socket. With a standard 1/2" impact air tool. If it does not come out then the 3/4" impact tool.
I started using the impact tool some years ago with the idea that if the aluminium was still solid it would not break and if it wasn't I better find it out now. I have done dozens. Never had the aluminium break and the thermostat comes out in 3 seconds. You may be the first one where the alu breaks using the impact tool. No problem. Remove the remaining pieces till it is straight and install the Renault thermostat Wahler 3029.83 in the hose. Put an extra clamp or tie wrap around the hose where the thermostat sits to prevent leakage. Remember to drill a 1 mm hole in the base of the thermostat and mount it in such a way that the hole is at the top. The wax pellet should go inside the aluminium tube.
I in fact use the 3029.89 89 degree thermostat in winter and the standard Fulvia 83 degree thermostat in summer.

Re: Thermostat Removal
General consensus has been to cut it out with a hacksaw blade after knocking out the middle of the thermostat.
Threads on the lancia mc forum recently.
Am intrigued by a hammer gun and will look at that next time.
