Naughty but...
Just to remind readers here that I am maintaining my BLOG "Fulvias in France".
Huib kindly put up the link here a while ago, but if you search the title in Google it comes up in the first few names.
I would love to have your comments - it's been a bit quite there!

Re: Naughty but...
Yes,
That's me. I have used the number for years - I even used to engrave it on my spanners.
What are all the VAR1016 parts?
Very few as far as I know: 45mm DDHF Solex carbs, camshafts 38/70/76/32, probably special pistons for 11.3/1 compression and probably some special work on the head and inlet manifold.
Munari's No 14 has VAR1016 stamped on the bellhousing but of course that is very different...

Re: Naughty but...
ahhh...
...the pistons...well if I remember from the parts catalogue there are a number of pistons available. Do you know which ones they were and how would I go about getting myself some.
Weren't the valves, seats and guides on the cylinder head etc hotter as well?
Hang on ....if your spanners were stamped with VAR1016 would they also be included as VAR1016 parts and wouldn't have that put put "a spanner in the works".?
No wonder your 1600 engine was the 'basket case' you mentioned???
Just as another aside - my engine also has a sheild with an 'L' stamped inside it on the bell housing - does anyone know what that means?

Re: Naughty but...
See the thread from CarloHF on 27/1/06 on the various cylinder head mods "VAR 1016".
Re: Naughty but...
Are you hoping to build a "VARIANTE 1016" then?
The Technical Data book gives no indication that the VAR 1016 engines had different valves etc.
The works did increase the valve size on some cars later - inlets became 39mm.
For pistons, well it depends what you want o do; there are various suppliers who can probably help.
The best I have seen so far come from CPS in Italy.
And the "L" might just stand for "Lancia"!

Re: Naughty but...
That's what i thought but does anyone else have it on their bell housing?
I read Carlos's thread ages ago. I have a date stamp on the cylinder head with if i remember 03/07/69 stamped on it.
Perhaps if i decide to race it might be a good idea to uprate at least to 45mm carbs but then the question of which make? oh yes and od course the adaptor plate.
Do you have the shield with the L inside Neil? Have you seen it Paul?
ps absolutely gorgeous 250swb...so shiny too!!!

Re: Naughty but...
03/07/69 yes a good 1600 date! The latest I have seen was October '73.
To fit 45mm carburettors, you have the choice of one of the replica manifolds that some suppliers offer. But sometimes these are very poor quality. I helped a chap with his installation. We had to saw and grind lumps off just to fit the thing and then found it was porous - we filled all the little holes with plastic metal. ANd the manifold cost £300 - outrageous.
It's either Webers or Dell'Ortos. Take your pick - some say the Dell'Ortos are better, but the carb market is dropping fast and it might be best to opt for the Webers for parts etc. I noticed that Munari's No 14 has 48mm Webers fitted these days as opposed to the Dell'Ortos it used to have.
I have never noticed the little plate I must say...
As for the 250SWB, well I like to keep my cars clean - snigger...

Re: Naughty but...
Yes, it has an L stamped next to the engine number. Date is ??/7/69 on the block (can't quite make the day out ).
Re: Naughty but...
You might want to try taking a hi res photo of it with a good quality digital camera and blowing it up on a computer.
Oh...and I looked at some photo's earlier and I noticed that there was another number stamp similar to the chassis number stamp on the bonnet water drainage gulley but instead of the top near the bulkhead where the chassis number is, this one runs along the right hand wing (as you sit in the car so the left wing as you stand in front of the radiator - I hope you get it but using off side near side doesn't make much sense - is there protocol for this?)
If I could post a photo I would but the process is as I understand a bit tricky.
I can't make out this number because its quite faded and I didn't take enough of a hi res photo of it.
Perhaps someone could shed some light if it appears on any other series one cars?
