Follow up ...

Not sure exactly where the front weatherstrips should go. Here's a picture of the underside of my bonnet:

I believe the 3 holes are for a retaining strip that holds the rubber in position? In that case, the rubber must be something like a blade, since it has to bridge quite a gap if it is to rest against the cross member near the top of the radiator?

In the meantime, you can see my non-original 'fix' at the far left of the picture -- a 'suitable' spring that pops the bonnet open very nicely when the catch is released.

The three holes are indeed for the retaining strip. If you are happy with the alternate solution, I would leave it as it is. Making the car original is virtually impossible considering the fact that you have an S2 subframe in an S1 body. If you still want to put the rubber strip on, let me know and I will post some pics of the strip and the rubber.

Thanks Huib.

Yes, originality is not at all an issue with my car! Actually, this is somewhat liberating, since it gives me freedom to tinker ... umm, sorry, do 'creative engineering', as the mood takes me.

Anyway, after all this the bonnet closes properly, so thanks to all for the help.
