Glacial progress & questions

Unread post by Christopher Adams »

I have stuck a few shiny bits on the fulvia to make it look a bit better.

For anyone else with a series 2, lada niva uses the same headlight adjusters / retaining rings. They were virtually free from a wreckers yard in NZ! I only needed a couple of headlight retaining rings to replace some corroded ones I had.

My questions are:

1. I want to put sound deadening under the bonnet, on the firewall, and on the underside of the roof before the roof lining goes in. does anyone have specific recommendations on good products and glues?
2. What would be the best thing to use to clean up the wiring loom? There is residue from tape, a little overspray, and 35 years woth of dirt.
3. Does anyone have a nice right hand headlight surround with the chrome finish to match the nice one in the photo I picked up on ebay?

Handy tips to get rid of paint overspray on electrical wires would be a tip I'd like to know.

Mine are on the wires that run along the 'A' pillars when the doors are opened.

I clean a dirty loom with stickeremover or paintstripper. Wipe the stripper on and after seconds off together with the paint residue. Do not leave on for hours as it can damage the fragile insulation.

don't know about for wiring but brake fluid normally attacks many paint types but doesn't attack rubbers or plastics so it can be used to soak items spoiled by paint overspray always worth a try to see if it works

I've thought about using paint stripper but I wouldn't want to use in the small gaps where the door hinges fix thru 'A' pillar mainly because I couldn't be sure about getting rid of all that corrosive residue and what it might do to rust inhibitors and pouring water into that section of the car would i think tempt fate.

What do professionals do for small amounts of overspray? (meaning Paul or Huib nudge nudge wink wink!!)
Is brake fluid a good idea? What other chemicals could or have been used? or simply change the wire for a new one?

Cheers for input
