changing from dunlop to girling
Re: changing from dunlop to girling
William, to be honest, the pedal pressure is only slightly heavier than standard Dunlop braked cars I have driven. Friends have driven my car and have commented on how well it stops. I had to modify the 21 mm parts to fit the Ser 1 cylinder as it is shorter than the Ser 2 cylinder. It was a bit of trail and error, using the 18mm parts as a guide.
Re: changing from dunlop to girling
The pedal force is 36% higher. Not really a problem for a man of average build or stronger.
Also to be considered is the volume of the fluid that is pumped. With a smaller master brake cilinder you need less pedal force but the travel is longer. The smallest I have seen is 17,6mm. Very near the 18mm of the S1 Fulvia's without servo.
Modifying your brakes with new parts, driving around the block and concluding everything is all right is one thing. Making sure they will work under all conditions such as a combination of years of neglect, bad rubber hoses, water in the system, air in the system, play on the wheelbearings, your daughter driving the car etc etc is another thing

Re: changing from dunlop to girling
William, just wanted to add some things:
- I use S2 girlings on my S1 because of the double brake lines. I would not just add them together and fit to one exit of master cilinder.
- Yellow stuff's that Paul mentioned do the job VERY well. But they are more expensive than the price per square cm that you calculated. Plus they feel very 'dead' in normal traffic. But if warmed up they are super.
- I hate the pipe work around girlings. I would run flexible lines from the caliper directly to the master cilinder. At least discard the short copper lines at the calipers alltogether
- Having the joy of a driving another car with twin master cilinders, I agree with Paul that is very desirable.
- Saw an ex works fulvia with vented discs from a f3 car the other day. Girling brakes with 5mm spacers in it, specially made bells and super standard Wilwood discs.
- If you go to fit competition pads, do it all around. Otherwise you will brake too hard in the rear when cold. Very risky when wet. Or at least fit a brake adjuster in the car for those conditions.

Re: changing from dunlop to girling
Yes, as usual I largely agree with all that Peter wrote.
On the Fanalone, we used flexibles direct to the calipers, running from, each side, one of those little aluminium T-pieces found on the rear axle of S2s.
On my own car, which Peter knows, I have iIntegrale-sized Yellow Stuff pads at the front, and in the Dunlop calipers at the rear, EBC Black Stuff pads, Black Stuff being road spec. Probably I am just lucky with this, the balance appears to be very good - especially when the front pads have warmed a little. Interestingly it doesn't take much to warm them to an acceptable level of "bite" - of course they are better in harder driving.

Re: changing from dunlop to girling
Further to my previous post. I found the Toyota Landcruiser part number for brake caliper overhaul kits, that will also do Ser2 Fulvia/2000. It is - 04479 30031. I checked with my local Toyota dealer today and they are still available.
Re: changing from dunlop to girling
Thank you Tony - a real help for many I suspect.

Re: changing from dunlop to girling
Very useful indeed, Tony.
I hope the dust caps for the small ones are exactly like the original and not like the ones being sold here which makes it necessary to machine the small pistons. The groove for the cap has to be extended down by 1,3mm.

Re: changing from dunlop to girling
Huib, as I remember, the dust caps were not exactly the same as the originals. However, in the 10 years since I overhauled the calipers, I have had no problems.
