Oil Pressure Gauge _ Not zeroing ?

Unread post by Michael Beattie »

Gents,

I just got my 1.6HF engine running again after a total strip down. However the Oil Pressure gauge now jumps to 50 psi when the ignition is turned on and when the engine starts moves up to 100psi.

I assume that the sender unit, which was working perfectly before, is not returning to it's zero position. Is there any way of adjusting it or the gauge. Doesit require the gentle tap with a blunt object to maybe losen the sensor? Or does it need replaced?

All suggestions gratefully accepted :)

Cheers

Michael

If the total strip down refers only to the engine the blunt object might work. If it refers to the car, you may have forgotten to ground the gauges on the dashboard which is through a fuse (at least on the other S1 cars. I haven't checked the schematic of the 1.6.)

It was only the engine, Huib

I will get the hammer down off the shelf :)

Why not pull the wire from the sender first. If the gauge goes to zero, the fault is in the sender

Another pre-hammer check, perhaps: the engine ground.

Some odd gauge readings on my S1 were cured when I fixed mine.

Thanks for the pointers, guys.

Well it seems to be the sender.

If you disconnect the sender wire, turn on the ignition, the gauge doesn't move, if you then ground the wire, the gauge goes to max.

With the wire connected to the sender, the gauge goes to 60psi when the ignition is on, and then rises to 100 when the engine is started.

I have tried a few gentle taps to the side of the sender, but there was no change, so it looks like I need a new sender unit, though I personally think that a mechanical gauge would be a better answer.

You can also send me the sender. I have a set up to repair and callibrate them.

Thanks for the offer Huib,

I have a 3 hillclimbs in the next 4 weeks, so getting it to you and back in time might be a problem. I'll take it off and see if there is anything I can do. Atleast I know it is taking a reading so I might have to wait until after the events to send it to you.

II'll let you know how I get on

Many thanks

Hi Michael,

My second series Fulvia berlina had the same behaviour, Huib fixed it for me.

Something else, are you perhaps related to Clive Beatty?
I am reading his life story which was published by the Australian Lancia Register. "Fifty Five Years of Dirty Hands"

Kind regards

Lucas
