noise after engine overhaul

Unread post by Christos »

Hi there
I assume that is quit boring to ask the same thing again, but I’m a bit disappointed. I just fit the 1,3 engine in my Fulvia after a complete overhauling and after the engine timing I was try to start the engine. Strange but it starts run immediately with the first try, means that the timing is ok…….BUT except that the engine runs very smooth there is a metallic noise somewhere on the top.
I’m not asking to tell me what is happens but to guide me where I have to start looking. I did every thing with extra care following the notes that came with the new cams INT 43-77 EXT 77-43.
There is also written a (107*) and INT and EXT 3,80mm but I don’t know what means. And then PROFILO h* 637 H 6,85mm.
Shall I check something else in order to solve the noise problem or to strip out the engine again and finally to sell the car??
Thanks again for your patience
Christos

I know these camshafts, having them in my own engine.

The 107 degrees means the crank position for maximum lift after TDC. The important number is the 3.80 (mm). This is the lift AT TDC at which you must set the camshafts - inlet opening, exhaust closing. If you have set them at the traditional 2.2mm however, I do not think offhand that you would have piston/valve collision problems.

If you do not know the meaning of the numbers, how did you set them?

6.85mm is the maximum lift. Multiply this by 1.5 (Fuvlia rocker ratio) to get the real maximum lift.

when i assembled my engine , it also started the first time and had this weird LOUD squeking noise.

it sounded like metal ons metal screetching.

In the end it was a blown intake manifold gasket , on the carb side , when the air sucked it made a LOUD squeeking noise. funny enough the engine ran fine and idled smooth , anyway , When i took the carbs off and put new gaskets in ,all was fine and quiet again.

When I gave the numbers to my mechanic he toldme that its easy to settup the engine. Now I know the meaning of the numbers and I assume that I have to chek again the camshaft possition.
Thanks again.

Eventualy the problem was the valves-piston clearance(less than 0,4mm) , so I did some work on the pistons and the engine runs quite and smooth. I had also a inlet cam sprocket teth wrong. Now I'm happy and I'll try to do some low revs jurneys just to be sure that everything is fine.
Thanks guys for yor help.
It's realy good to have someone knows the Fulvias secrets and specially when share this knowledge with others

I am surprised about the clearance - except that the sprocket was a tooth out.

Normally with standard valves there is usually about 35mm clearance at TDC.

I hope that the valves are still sealing well on your engine?

All the best

I forgot to tell that the valves are 1.25mm bigger than the stadard. Anyway, today I had the first run with the new engine and it was really good. I drive about 100 km with sort accelerations till 4000 revs.
I feel the engine quite stif and strong and it has a beutifull bass noise. The oil pressure is between 50 to 70 and the temp around 70*. With 5th gear and 4000 revs I have about 145 kM/H on the clock.
The only wird think is the gear level that plays more than the normal. I believe that I need to adjust the carbs and the dog leg in order to eliminate this.
I' ll let you know about the rest
